For thousands of years, wine has been one of the world's most popular drinks. It's not difficult to see why Bordeaux wines are so popular amongst the British - they are incredibly deep and delicious. Most of the wine produced in this area is red, but there are some brilliant sparkling white wines produced around here including Cremant de Bordeaux. It's worth exploring around this area to discover some beautiful towns and villages that are the perfect place to come to enjoy a big glass of Bordeaux's finest wines alongside some rustic food.

There are literally thousands of wineries here, many offering free tours of their estates and a chance to sample the wines. If thinking of coming to the region on cheap holidays, check out Chateau Haut Brion, which is ideally suited for the Bordeaux vineyards.

Australian wine has become one of the most popular wines in the New World category. After previously being thought of as tasting over-ripe, years of practice have meant that these wines have now been perfected. The grapes for wines such as Pinot Noir are now grown in the warmer climes of Tasmania. Whilst on package holidays around here, be sure to visit the Hunter Valley region, which has more vineyards than anywhere else in Australia.

Napa Valley is the place most people instantly think of when considering New World wines. Found just a few miles from San Francisco, this is a great place to come to combine a city break with a chilled-out wine trip. This is an area with a surprising amount of history, as vineyards have thrived here since around the 1800s, thanks to the warm climate. Go on one of the wine tours around here to sample some incredible Merlot, Chardonnay and Zinfandel.
