Baby on the plane

By Kate Pilch

In two weeks time I am going to be on the plane to Europe with my ten months old daughter. I have been organizing this trip for such a long time that I really hope I am well prepared for it. It is not easy to travel with kids or babies so I decided to do quite a lot of research. 32 hours on the plane will be a challenge for both of us and it will be a big test of patience. I am quite confident that my daughter will like this trip and we will both enjoy sitting on the plane.

I have never been traveling before by plane with my little one. We did few car trips and camping trips together and it was really nice. But traveling with baby by myself by plane is going to be a totally different experience. It will be really important to rest on the plane as much as possible. I will try to be relaxed and calm as my mood will affect my baby's behavior. Relaxed baby will sleep more and the whole trip will be easier.

There are important safety issues that I have to consider when travelling with baby on the plane. I have to change plane twice during my whole trip so I decided to have baby carrier with me all the time. It is the safest and the most comfortable option. You can have hands free and you can walk faster if you have your little one secured in carrier. Your bag with travel documents should be in your hand all the time or in a secure, flat pouch on your stomach.

Make sure you keep an eye on your kid all the time. It is easy to loose sight of your little one and get separated from him. Airlines don't give money back for tickets if you miss a plane, no matter how important the reason is. It is the most important rule of traveling, always hold your baby's hand or observe him closely. One of my jobs was at the airport. I used to observe desperate parents that couldn't find their precious kids. Little kids were usually playing unaware in one of airport shops.

Who said it is easy to travel with baby. The more opinions I hear the more careful I am to prepare our trip carefully. i don't want to be one of those parents that have to pay for expensive alcohol just because the baby decided to play with a bottle. I will be careful and I am sure I will be able to count on airline staff whenever necessary. From my experience I know that both airport staff and stewardesses are very friendly. I am sure it won't be that bad.
