How to have the best time in Stellenbosch

By Anika Schelhase

One of my favourite little towns around Cape Town has long since been Stellenbosch. When I was about 13 years old my best friend moved from our sleepy little home town by the sea to the heart of the Boland and made Stellenbosch her new home. I used to spend a lot of weekends there, whiling away the time in some trendy little street caf eating ice-cream to ward off the intense Boland heat and taking leisurely strolls through the "dorp" underneath the great old oak trees lining the streets.

When university days eventually made its long awaited appearance, my choice of tertiary education didn't allow me to study there, major disappointment. This however did not deter me from taking every opportunity that presented itself to spend as much time there as possible, partying on down with the local students. My friends father took a position there as a lecturer at the university, so she remained there to study. This off course suited me perfectly as I always had a friend to have fun with and most importantly somewhere to sleep should things get a little late!

Places to sleep will never be a problem for visitors though as guest houses abound, offering from budget to luxury accommodation, suitable for business travelers as well as tourists. Stellenbosch makes the perfect base for your travels through the Cape Winelands as it is centrally situated and if you chose to stay there, you could spend a good few days there without going anywhere else. The amount of things to do in the town itself as well as the surrounds is endless. The good food and wine being at the top of my list.

Generally thought of as a summer destination, Cape Town doesn't draw that many visitors in the winter months. But let me tell you there's nothing better than sitting in front of a big old fireplace with the rain falling down outside, sipping a fabulous cabernet sauvignon. You won't experience this better anywhere than in the Cap Winelands.

Every so often I still like to get in the car, take a leisurely drive to Stellenbosch and relive a small piece of my younger days. And I'm never disappointed as the atmosphere is still exactly the same! The town is as picturesque as ever, the oak trees are still shady and gorgeous and the wine still tastes brilliant. So why not go and spend some time there and relive some of my youth and create your own small town memories.
