One of the main features within this area is the valley which is formed by the mountains and the river.

The Mekong river feature fifteen different tributaries and it consists of a number of waterways. The water ways that form part of this river covers an area of 2400 hundred kilometers but only one third of these can be navigated. 70 per cent of the country is covered with mountains and the Annamite mountains to the east of Laos have a height of two thousand six hundred meters.

The people that reside in this area can be categorized into 68 different groups which an further be broken down into three primary groups. The primary groups within this area are Lao Loum, Lao Theung and Lao Sung.

The tourism industry in this area has dramatically grown since 1990 and every year this area welcomes one million international tourists. The tourism sector in this area is now worth a large amount of money. Nowadays there is an increasing number of options which are available with regards to tourism. This area is popular with tourists because of the relaxed way of living that is enjoyed in this area. This area has a number of Asian elements and most other areas have some of this element.

There is a vast amount of things for people to see and do within this area. The main attractions within this area vary from resort to resort. In the resort of Luang Prabang the main tourist attractions are the colonial architecture and culture that is related to Buddhism. The main tourist attractions within the resort of Vientiane include the gastronomy and also the ancient temples. The region of Plains of Jars is popular due to the modern and ancient culture and history that is within this area.

All of the resorts within the area of Laos offer tourists the perfect place to relax and unwind. There are a number of world heritage sites within this area and these include Wat Phu and Luang Prabang. During the year there are a number of festivals that take place and these include the Laos New Year celebrations that take place between the thirteen and fifteenth of April. These celebrations also consist of a Water Festival, which closely resembles the Water Festival that is held in Thailand.

This area is popular for its handcrafted and silk products and these products can be found on sale in a number of different places. Mulberry tea is a local speciality within this area.
