Watching your wallet with free activities near Dubai hotels

By Emily Collins

When people think of Dubai they automatically think of luxury and why shouldn't they? This thriving, growing city is known for it's endless shopping malls, luxury hotels and exclusive bars. However, you'll be surprised to find just how much those on a budget can get out of this fantastic city. With many Dubai hotels situated on the creek that the city was built on, you'll be well-placed to spend an evening strolling along the water's edge. Conserving your cash doesn't mean that you should miss out on quintessential holiday experiences, admire the fabulous architecture and jostle for space in the crowded bazaars watching the locals haggle and taking in the ambience, you'll soon find that budget and boring don't always go together.

Ignore the call of commercialism, avoid the malls and drag yourself away from the well-equipped gift shop at the hotels in Dubai, instead it's time to hit the beach and top up your tan. You'll find that the salt content here is quite high which not only works wonders on your skin, but also means that when you hit the water you'll float lazily on top of the waves.

Carry on pampering yourself with a free appointment at the Formul'a French Hairdressing Academy. This training salon offers free haircuts, so if you're feeling brave, trust a student to do your hair and head home with a sexy new look. You could always play it safe and go for a simple trim and tidy up, before you skip out feeling fresh and fabulous ready for a night out.

Keeping an eye on your cash in Dubai doesn't necessarily mean heading back to one of the hotels for an early night. Many of the Dubai bars offer happy hours or Ladies Nights, with free drinks and discounts. At the Double Decker pub you could win yourself the grand prize of a free holiday in the karaoke competition. This English themed pub is popular with Brits abroad and contains many special offers with free drinks for ladies on Tuesday nights. There are a number of affordable snacks and traditional pub dishes on the menu and live sports are also shown. Another popular Tuesday night destination is Fibber Magee's which has a quiz night with drinks vouchers for ladies and free drinks on offer as prizes.

For an evening of local culture, head to The Scene Club - the region's first proper cinema club. A visit here is a really nice way to experience the cultural boom happening across the whole of the United Arab Emirates. Free films are shown as part of the Dubai International Film Festival, and the varied program runs all year round. This exciting and modern enterprise aims to improve creative and cultural awareness in and around Dubai, and is a fun way to see the young and emerging modern side of the region.
