Croatia is becoming increasingly popular as more travellers realise it's the ideal cheap holiday destination. Not yet infected with the inflated costs you'll find elsewhere in Europe, Croatia nevertheless offers tranquil beaches, fascinating Roman history and great weather. If you're looking for somewhere that offers a bit of everything, Croatia is the place to go.
When people think of Croatia they will often immediately picture Dubrovnik, the great walled city by the sea. With its great beaches, pretty harbour (great for ship spotting!) and amazing old town, there is a lot to see here. Take a tour of the city's medieval walls, which will give you breathtaking views over the ocean and the city within. Stroll about the cobbled streets and find little restaurants, bars and galleries. You're sure to fall in love with Dubrovnik as many have before.
Most people who fly to Croatia will land in Split, the major jumping-off point for visitors to the country. There are many late deals which take you here, with its pretty marina with cafes and bars overlooking the port, a popular spot at all times of the day. There are green parks and quaint local restaurants to explore here as well.
There is a wide pedestrianized main street in Split offering plenty of great shopping opportunities, and if you're staying in Split it's a great place to base yourself for day trips to nearby smaller islands.
If you're keen on history then spend your holidays in Pula, a city in the northern area of Croatia, which has a great collection of ancient Roman ruins, some of which are incredibly significant and rare. Amphitheatres, churches, temples and medieval gates are just some of the sights you can see here. Of course, it's not all about old buildings - there is some terrific diving to be had here, or you can simply relax on the beach.
