Sailfest Three Days Of Festivity For Sea Dogs And Landlubbers Alike

Sailfest is one of the most eagerly awaited summer festivals in Connecticut. Held in the small town on New London over 3-days each July, the festival usually attracts more than 300,000 adults and children. People requiring accommodation find that the Hampton Inn & Suites Hotel at Mystic is conveniently located, just a handful of miles away. It offers top quality service that is very welcoming to all guests. Both New London and Mystic are delightful seaports.

Festival entertainment is in many instances provided free. Fun runs, whaler cruises and amusement rides are all on offer. A big mix of music acts perform at Customs House, City Pier and Hygienic Art Park. Pop, rock, jazz, blues, hip hop and Celtic are all on offer.

Fireworks are a particularly strong favorite. They are typically scheduled on the Saturday night of the festival. The display organized at the festival is considered the second biggest display of fireworks in the northeast. It is offered to the public under the sponsorship by the Mashantucket Pequot Nation. This native American tribal people are the original inhabitants of the area predating the arrival of Europeans.

The event is staged in the picturesque and historic Downtown New London Area (DNLA), located at the mouth of the Thames River. New London is one of the smallest cities in the USA, but its boundaries are packed full of rich cultural and historical significance dating back to the Civil War.

The town of New London has a long maritime history and serves as home for the USCGA. The academy was established in 1876 and supplies college education to for future Coast Guard officers. About 400 cadets enter the academy each year. Admission is based totally on merit and is very competitive with applications totaling over 2,500. About 200 cadets graduate each year.

New London has a population of about 26,000 people. Its Downtown New London Association (DNLA) has organized Sailfest for the past seven years. It is a non-profit entity comprised of about 60 merchants. It is the main event managed by this agency. The festival is now an established tradition in New London that extends back more than 30 years.

All money raised by the festival are used to develop the city. Visitors needing accommodation during the festival might consider staying at Hampton Inn & Suites Mystic.
