Visit Atlantis Marine World On Long Island

By Mike Woods

Atlantis is not just an ancient legendary lost continent. Atlantis Marine World is the only Public Aquarium on Long Island. Just ten years old, itself, this unique aquarium is an especially kid-friendly place to visit.

Here youngsters and their parents find interactive fun and adventure that's also educational. Visitors can dive with sharks, go snorkeling with tropical fish, and feed a hungry stingray.

There are "Mommy and Me programs for children as young as two years. Hands-on activities are especially designed for curious and active small fry. Kid-friendly guides use stories, music, crafts and live-creature encounters to introduce the little ones to the fascinating life forms in and on the sea.

Older children are offered a wealth of age appropriate activities inside the Aquarium as well as outdoors. Sleepover nights are a big favorite for groups of twenty or more. Activities include a guided tour and talk, crafts, and fish feeding. Kids dine on pizza and wake to muffins and bagels.

The Long Island aquarium offers a variety of camps and outdoor programs. There are tour boat trips and walks through a variety of ecosystems and habitats. Pre-teens and young teens can participate in the Scientist for a Day program. They will learn to collect scientific data the way real scientists do.

Adults love Atlantis Marine World too and there's plenty for them to do. Exhibits focused on various species and habitats provide information that will surprise and fascinate. Outdoors there are hikes and canoe tours that highlight various creatures, plant species and ecosystems.

In warm weather the Atlantis tour boat offers a Saturday night cruise on the Peconic river with wine and cheese. The aquarium is a fabulous venue for weddings and other social and corporate events. A variety of catering options are available.

Endangered species have a friend at the rescue center in the Aquarium. Run by a not-for-profit foundation the rescue center cares for ailing or injured animals and prepares them to return to the wild. Visitors to the hospital can view seals, whales, dolphins and other endangered creatures being rehabilitated.

Just 25 minutes away from the aquarium is the Courtyard by Marriott Long Island MacArthur Airport hotel. This is an ideal place for out-of-town wedding guests. Parents of kids enjoying a sleep-with-the fishes adventure can kick back here.

Guestrooms feature a pleasant, flexible workspace with complimentary WiFi. There are spacious, luxurious bathrooms. Beds are comfy and bedding is plush.

Visitors can work out in the fitness center or relax in the indoor swimming pool. Guests are also offered free passes to World Gym. Limo service is available as well as free shuttle service to the air port and rail road station.
