Quilt Making in Georgia

By Mercie Hallow

Quilt making is an old American tradition that is passed on from generations to generations. Crafts people turn to quilt making as a hobby and sometimes a good business opportunity. Quilt making involves sewing different types of patches to create a quilt. Quilt is sometimes used as bedding, a traditional gift and in some regions to keep and record history. History is recorded by sewing patches into a quilt that symbolizes an event in history.

Several designs can be made on quilts and different types of fabrics may be used to create patches. There is generally no rule as to what type of fabric can be used as long as it is appropriate for the quilts use. Some quilts are used as baby wrap-ups or baby quilts thats why a more comfortable fabric such as flannel, wool or cotton should be used to suit the babys sensitive skin.

Felt is oftentimes used as a patch to design the quilt. Felt is both economical and comfortable to use. Some quilt makers are taking the advocacy of being thrifty in quilt making thus, they opt to use second hand fabrics for their patches. Second hand fabrics are better known as fabric cut-outs from used shirts, jeans, and wool or cotton sweaters. These fabric types are best used for quilt making as they are comfortable and easy to use.

The Cotton Patch Quilters is a non-profit organization with an advocacy to promote quilt awareness to the public. They hold quilt shows and meetings among members who are also quilt makers. They raise funds through quilt shows and bazaars which they usually give to charities and social organizations or to hold other quilt making programs. The Cotton patch Quilt Guild is based on Athens. Georgia.

The Cotton Patch Quilt Guild is having their annual 2009 Quilt Show in Watkinsville, Georgia. If you happen to stay in Georgia, dont forget to miss this event and take part to the largest gathering of quilt makers across the country!
