Arts and Crafts: Jewelry Making in Alaska

By Mercie Hallow

There is huge money making opportunity out there and one needs to open his/her mind to this type of business. A good business sense, creative handwork, a sense of good direction and a keen sense of what is saleable can lead to a huge money making machine. What is indeed saleable? What is a business package that has low capital and high profits in the end?

Answers to these questions lie in Arts and Crafts making. Crafters are small business people that bravely decided to turn their hobbies to money making machines. In bazaars or arts and crafts fairs, you will find lots of these creative people doing the hustle and selling their goods to interested shoppers. Excellent sales and marketing technique partnered with an excellent product will really make an excellent business run well.

Jewelry making or the art of making jewelry is one example of a hobby that can be a money making opportunity. The materials needed to make a simple jewelry bracelet are: glass beads or any commercially available beads, nylon string or thin wire, a rounded long-nosed pliers, needle and jewelry clasps. Jewelry clasps are purchased at any craft making shop. You may want to omit this and resolve to have your jewelry tied around your hand.

Beads are inserted into the nylon string and clasps are sewed in directly at both ends. It is important to measure your wrist properly so you will know how loose you want your bracelet to be. Rounded Long-nosed pliers are used to roll, scroll and design a wire beaded bracelet.

Have fun with your jewelry and experiment with using 2 to 3 types of beads in different colors and shapes. You could also opt to place dangling charms to give it a more personalized effect. Beading materials are not only limited to wires and nylon strings but also silk ribbons which you can tie around your hand for a more girly and delicate effect.
