Sun Glare Helps Keep The Sun Flares Away

By Bruce Jopples

Sunglasses, or sun glare, as they are more popularly called, are basically a type of protective eyewear. They have been designed primarily to ensure that the eyes do not get affected or damaged by the bright sunlight. They also help to protect from exposure to high energy visible radiation that is emitted by the sun. Some of the designs also help to cancel out the harmful ultraviolet radiations.

These glasses even act as visual aid, when designed into sunglasses or spectacles for daily use. These forms also need special lenses. Normally darkened, polarized or colored glasses are used, as per the requirement. It has been found that the exposure to direct sunlight creates major problems to the eyes. Some people are into professions, which require them to spend a lot of time outdoors, hence resulting in more exposure to sunlight.

For these people, it is recommended by medical experts that they use special protective eye wear. They basically make sure that the UV rays and blue light are kept away from entering the retina. This is because these are the two components from the entire band that cause the maximum harm to the eyes. This is why sun glasses have become very important and useful in protecting the eyes.

Sun glare has known to be in existence for a long time now. In the prehistoric time, the Inuit people used to wear flattened glasses made from walrus ivory. These glasses used to have narrow slits for visibility. In the 12th century, the Chinese used glasses made from flat panes using smoky quartz. They did not have any corrective powers, but protected them from the glares.

The movie stars helped in getting tremendous popularity for the sun glare in the beginning of the 19th century. They claimed that the main reason for using the glasses was that they wanted to make sure that the public does not recognise them. Another explanation for their usage was that it helped them against the powerful light of the arc lamps used in the shootings.

Soon these glasses began to be produced inexpensively with the help of mass production techniques. This started in the year 1929 in United States of America. Sam Foster, the man who started producing them, found an easy market on the beaches of Atlantic City.

Sun glares help to improve visual clarity by protecting the eyes from the solar glares. They also protect the eyes against the visible and invisible components of the rays of the sun. They are also used to hide eyes. This makes eye contact impossible and it has a strong impact, when it comes to non verbal communication.
