Why Visit Gran Canaria?

By Henry D Chester

Gran Canary accounts for over a third of the total population of the Canary Islands, and so is not surprisingly the second most populous island in the archipelago. The near circular coastline contains some incredibly varies landscape, including lush forest land, deep craggy ravines and barren stretches of volcanic rock, meaning that the island supports many different kinds of plant and animal life. If that hasn't convinced you to book a ticket then here is a few examples of the kind of things you can do on Gran Canaria.

To really get to the heart of the natural beauty of the island, you may have to walk a long way. Fortunately, however, there are many companies offering safaris across the island, on which you will see plenty of the wildlife on the island, and get a taste of the variety of landscapes. If this isn't extreme enough for you, then there's always the option of the helicopter tour!

There is also plenty of marine life to see as well. Taking one of the whale and dolphin tours can be an incredible way to spend the day. The boats are often specially designed so as to make as little noise as possible so as to not startle the wildlife, and the glass bottoms mean you can get a really good view. You can expect to see the likes of Bottlenose dolphins, along with other species of dolphin, and Pilot whales and the rare Beaked whales, among others.

If these big mammals don't scare you enough, then you may want to take a trip to Cocodrilo Park, which houses Europe's largest collection of crocodiles. Those who just want an animal or danger free swim should head over to the water park Ocean Park where you can enjoy waterslides and wave machines.

The wildlife that is so prevalent on this island can sometimes make you forget about perhaps one of the most fascinating creatures that make their home on the island: humanity. The fascinating story of the history of the Canary Islands is told throughout the museums and galleries that can be found on the island.
