Kau Coffee Festival in Pahala, Hawaii

By Mara Hernandez-Capili

Kau coffee is a famous coffee variant in Hawaii. It is famous for its distinct chocolate, cherry and coconut hint of taste. It also possesses a hint of citrus and floral notes. Hawaii has a soil which has a bit of volcanic content which makes the coffee cherries gain its unnatural taste. The warm, tropical climate at Hawaii also plays a big part on the taste of the Kau coffee cherries.

Production of Kau coffee was the primary business venture of Lori Obra and her late husband Rusty. At that time they were both retired professionals and were wondering what to do next, where one option is to land a part time job. They found the answers when they visited a friend's farm and discovered the Kau coffee variant. They started cultivating the Kau coffee cherries in their farm and soon, started their own shop- selling authentic Kau coffee beans.

Coffee is the perfect buddy of employees who look for a relaxing break and students who are up all night reviewing for their exams. Coffee is known to be the perfect defense against sleepiness. Coffee contains caffeine that is why it is perceived to be an addicting drink. The rise of coffee chains such as Starbucks Coffee, Seattle's Best (SBC), Gloria Jean's, etc. had brought about the sudden popularity of coffee. In some countries, coffee became some sort of a status symbol since it could only be afford by the working class because of its steep prices.

Kau coffee is carefully cultivated in the farms of farm owners and personally handpicked and dried in small batches. The Kau Coffee Festival in Pahala is an event to celebrate the most famous coffee in Hawaii. There will be a songwriting contest and exhibition in tribute for the Kau Coffee. An educational booth/ exhibit will also be present at the Festival to promote public awareness of the famous Kau coffee.

If coming from Hawaii, never miss a chance to attend the Kau Coffee Festival and taste the awesome goodness of Kau coffee.
