The Top Wonders of Port Douglas

By Joseph Richards

Port Douglas is about an hours drive north along a beautiful coastal road from Cairns and was once a tiny fishing village. Today it is a tourist centre and a Mecca for food lovers with a wide variety of wonderful restaurants, cafes and bars.

On Macrossan Street you will find the village shops, restaurants and bars. It is a street beautifully lined with many, original, 19th century buildings as well as newer builder that architecturally blend nicely.

After the cyclone, in 1911, the port population went down to only 500. It began to raise again, many years later due to the construction of the Sheraton Mirage Resort , built in 1980s. The Sheraton brought in the tourists and begin of an increase in restaurants and accommodation.

At the end of Macrossan Street you can enjoy a beautiful beach, with a stinger net in the sea, enabling a safe water enjoyment. The other end of the street is home to a marina, where the Sheraton located. The beach there offers activities which include, parasailing, helicopter rides, and Dive School. At the marina you can enjoy a day of golf or yachting.

On Sundays there is a Sunday Market held in Market Park which has been going for about twenty years. It provides you with the opportunity to but locally hand made arts and crafts of every description. In 1998, the council decreed this market to be a Cotters Market, thereby ensuring that the goods on offer for sale are made only by the stall holder of their immediate family making it a wonderfully unique place to shop.

There is such a choice of accommodation, luxury or budget that you will always be guaranteed a bed for the night although in May you may need to book in advance as Port Douglas Carnivale is on for ten days and is one of the most popular events in Tropical North Queensland.

If you are looking for five star luxury then check out the Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas. It has a beachfront Oasis directly onto four mile beach, a championship golf course, five acres of salt water swimming lagoons, three restaurants, a country club with gym, tennis courts and a lap pool and a kids club. I dont think you could possibly ask for anything else.
