Earth Day 2009 Overview

By Mercie Hallow

As stewards of our planet we are all expected to take care of it and do anything that we can to preserve it. There had been documentaries and films dedicated to the preservation and improvement of Mother Earth such as The Inconvenient Truth. In this film, we can see the slightly deterioration of our planet because of the slowly melting of ice caps. Our barren forests and dry lands are also proofs of global warming. The film encourages everyone to be more environmentally aware and to be more caring for our planet.

Earth Day 2009 is a worldwide event with programs that benefit our mother earth. All countries around the world are expected to participate as Earth Day organizers are scattered worldwide to increase public awareness to fight Global warming and other environmental issues. Earth Day is a chance for everyone to stop and think of our planets welfare before its too late.

Earth Hour is an example of one of Earth Days programs that aims to save Mother Earth. It is focused in saving almost half of the worlds energy and electricity resource by shutting down our electricity (in unison) for 60 seconds or one minute. This is a united action throughout the world and by this we conserve almost half of the earths electricity and energy reserves. Earth Hour was proven successful in many countries such as Australia and the Philippines.

Another solution to issues concerning the worlds economic crisis and environmental issues as well is the creation of green-collared jobs. What are green collar jobs? Green collar jobs are jobs that provide decent income or salary to employees and at the same time contributing to a cleaner and safer environment. Jobs in solar power plants are examples of green collared jobs. It is heartwarming to know that the two most pressing issues of our time, which is unemployment and global warming is addressed in this one solution.
