We're here on a 2 week vacation with our kids. Although we've only been here a day it seems like it's been a week. We left Los Angeles and arrived Alejuela, and there jumped on a island hopper to the nicoya peninsula. From there some friends who have a house here picked us up. We went to their house and grounded out, had some drinks and bathed in their pool.
The kids just loved bouncing around in the pool all night. Phil and I got wasted with our friends... cocktails on the deck. We slept soundly. This morning we went horseback riding along the beach. When it became to unbearably hot we went back to the house. In the afternoon we rented a car and drove up the coast, and ended up checking into a swank beach resort hotel.
It feels like Fantasy Island here. The hotel staff is catering to our every need. The people here at reception are very warm, very informative. We checked in for just one night, and plan to just play it by ear. I'd be okay with staying here for the remainder of our stay. Our room here is unbelievable. We walked around and scoped the gardens and took in some night air while the kids were down at the pool.
The kids have since taken showers to get the chlorine off of them, ( I much prefer the salt water pools), and are now fast asleep. Phil is watching the big screen TV, while I excitedly plan our trip. I think I have it all planned out, thanks to all of the information the folks at reception provided us. Of course, in the morning I will have to run it by the family to see what they think.
After breakfast tomorrow I'd like to take the kids horseback riding. One option is to ride along the beach at sunrise. Another is to ride into the reserve down forested pathways. Both will take us through some private farms and pastures, as well and pass by both primary and secondary growth forests. We all want to see monkeys.. and sloths, big cats, and parrots, just to prove to ourselves that we are , indeed, in the tropics. But beyond that, I also just want to spend some real, quality time with my family.
We can all hang out at the pool in the event we decide on staying another night here. Later we can go boating into the sunset and cruise up the coast on a charter boat. It's unbelievably tropical here. The jungle meets up with the ocean with just a thin strip of beach. Monkeys can be heard from miles away.. and sometimes the sound is smothered by the battle calls of small green parrots that fly around in swarms.
I was told about a tour that will take us on a night hike through the reserve to see what lurks in the dark. Nocturnal tarantulas prowl, and armadillos trudge around. Hummingbirds sleep and bats boom around overhead. I'm curious to experience that. I'm out of there the first sign of a mosquito, though. I'll be back here in this posh resort, taking a bubble bath, sipping tea and listening to my ipod.
