An Overview of a Master Businessman's Life

By Mara Hernandez-Capili

I happen to read a truly inspiring piece of article showing the speech of Filipino-Chinese business tycoon John Gokongwei (for the graduating class of the John Gokongwei Business School in Ateneo de Manila University) in the Internet. His speech is very inspiring as he describes his road and battles as a simple soap sales boy to one of the richest person in the Philippines today. His message brings forth one lesson that all those aspiring to be successful business persons ought to know: embracing change .

According to this man, one should look at change as an opportunity. Change should encourage one to be more creative in his systems and not let it be a source of fear. Embrace change and welcome the changes that happen around you. According to Gokongwei, he saw the World War 2 in the Philippines as an opportunity to trade stocks from United States of America to the country.

Change is the reason that made him create "Johnny-come-lately" products and services while facing the giant companies producing the same product. One example of this is when he brought the idea of budget airline in the Philippines because he ahs a dream that "every Filipino should fly". He went against the giant Philippine Airlines (PAL) then a premier airline company.

John Gokongwei's life is an example of a "rags to riches" story that because of sheer will and determination to succeed led him to the place where he is now. His story reminds us that it is not impossible for anyone who has a strong desire planted in his heart of hearts. His life was strewn equally with failures. I remember a famous anecdote by Michael Jordan which states that he had "999 failures until he mastered his craft".

This article is written for anyone who has an entrepreneurial mind and spirit. This is just another true story of how a simple and poor boy hustled and won in life.
