By Frederick Hoymer

Somewhere in rural North Yorkshire lies a town of enchanting beauty. A town where stately old spa buildings are surrounded by lovely flowers and where conference goers in business suites browse through numerous antique shops. This is the town of Harrogate - North Yorkshire.

Some of the best known buildings are: The Royal Pump Room Museum, the Royal Baths and the Mercer Gallery. The town is also known internationally for hosting expos and conferences. The large number of these conferences goers that are forever arriving and departing give the town a very international feel.

The Harrogate International Centre is widely perceived to be one of the top conference and expo centers in Europe and is in fact internationally renowned. Every year brings more than 500 000 visitors who attend one of the numerous conferences and expos in town. No wonder therefore that the area around the center is packed with hotels, boutiques and restaurants of international standard. In the vicinity is also the lovely Harrogate gardens.

The Valley Gardens provide beautiful displays of flowers throughout the whole year, which often incorporate rare and strange flowers. In the gardens you will also find the Sun Pavilion where many functions take place regularly. It's a popular venue for 'tea dances' and live entertainment as well. Nearby you will also find Harlow Carr botanical gardens.

The Royal Pump Room is Harrogate's finest spa building. In the museum are exquisite displays of jewelry, ceramics and costumes. Not far from here is the Mercer, an art gallery that was originally opened in 1806 under the name of The Promenade Room. Various expos, lectures and discussion groups take place here every year. This is where you will also find the opulent Victorian Turkish baths where can really pamper yourself in a way that is seldom found in our day and age.

Harrogate will forever be famous for its beautiful landscaped gardens and fine old buildings, but the town certainly has more to offer than only this. Extensive redevelopment has recently converted some parts of town into fashionable sidewalk cafes and a lively 'pavement cafe' culture is busy taking shape around these. There are also numerous pubs and several wine bars and the many restaurants offer cuisine to satisfy any taste.

If you are perhaps the spouse of someone attending one of the numerous conferences in town and you have lots of free time and money to spend, Harrogate will not disappoint you either. There are more than enough stylish boutiques, design houses and art/craft shops to keep you entertained for days on end.

For enthusiastic theater goers, the well-known Theatre on Oxford Street hosts international standard performances on a regular basis.

A visit to Harrogate - North Yorkshire is one of those experiences that will stay with you long after you have left. It is a town of rare beauty that will become one of your fondest memories for years to come.
