Inverness Vacations And Some Things You Should Know

By Iain MacDonald

Inverness, widely referred to as the capital of the Scottish Highlands, was ceremoniously granted city status in two thousand and one and is currently the only city to be found in the Highlands of Scotland. Uniquely (in the UK) Inverness has no statutory boundaries which can cause problems with population statistics. The estimations are distorted further by the fact that the population of the city is increasing dramatically, Inverness has the highest growth rate of any UK city. One thing we can say for certain is that the population of Inverness is rather content, in 2008 the Telegraph.co.uk took a survey of the quality of life in 189 cities in Britain and Inverness was ranked fifth. Following on we can safely say that Inverness is a pretty alright place in which to spend some time and this is most probably one of the factors which make the city immensely popular with tourists. Crucially there is plenty of bed & breakfast accommodations in Inverness with most of it being able to be booked online.

Inverness is also referred to as the gateway to the Scottish Highlands for the simple fact that it is best placed to make the most of the Highland public transport system and a large amount of tourist attractions are not too far away. Probably the best way to get to them is via an organized tour or day trip. A few organizations visiting places such as, Urquart Castle, Culloden or Loch Ness or for the adventurous visitors it is possible to visit such places as Orkney in a day. It is also possible to go on a small number of city tours, such as those run by City Sightseeing or Tony Harmsworth.

Some tourists stay in 2 towns or cities in the Highlands say Inverness then Fort William. The town of Fort William is more popular with people who enjoy sports especially ramblers, hill walkers and mountaineers who take their chances getting to the top of Ben Nevis which looks down upon the town. Similarly Fort William bed & breakfast accommodation and rather like all bed & breakfast accommodation in Scotland it is most often not too expensive, superb value for money and extremely comfortable, tidy and clean with world renowned hospitality.

One important thing you should know is that the nearest airport to Inverness is, about, 7 miles to the east at Dalcross. It is relatively easy to catch a bus to the small but busy airport which is quite cheap. If you require maps of Inverness then you can get them for free at the tourist office, which is on Castle Wynd. While you are enjoying your Inverness vacation you should remember to visit Inverness Castle, Inverness Museum and Art Gallery, the 'stone of tubs' and Mercat Cross especially the Castle Garrison Encounter, an interactive experience which is great fun.
