By Jack Pineczak

Buffalo New York is well publicized for its nasty winters. But if you are a snow lover, there are many activities for you to do. For starters, nothing beats attending a Buffalo Bills game in late December or January. Feel the power of more than seventy thousand fans hollering for their football team while the snow is coming down. Start your game day experience by tailgating in the parking lot prior to the game. Munch down on some Buffalo wings. Sample some great Canadian beer or taste some local ale from a microbrewery.

Trail riding with snow machines is a very popular winter activity around the Buffalo area. There are lots of snowmobile shops to satisfy the desires of this winter fun loving industry. Some people like to load up their snow machines on trailers and take them into the really rural areas in New York State for some major trail cutting. They take week long excursions just to get their winter fix. Many people like to use the sled as a way to go bar hopping. Even the police have snowmobiles around Buffalo. They hunt the bar hoppers down, dishing out tickets for drinking and driving. Yes, you can get a DUI on a snowmobile.

Do you like to ski? Skiing is also a pretty popular way to make the best of the Buffalo winters. There are a number of decent slopes in the greater Western New York region. Experienced skiers might say that the slopes around Buffalo are rather small and not challenging enough. But, the people who live around Buffalo sure seem to enjoy them. I guess you could think of it as a great place to learn how to ski without crashing at a hundred miles an hour. And, if you really don't want to ski, there is still the warm lodge full of good looking yuppies with a fair amount of disposable income.

Snowboarding has become a very popular national sport in the USA. It has also become popular around the Buffalo area. In the early 1990s you might only have seen a few snowboarders here and there on the ski slopes. Now they are much more common. Just like skiing, the rolling hills south and east of Buffalo provide adequate quality slopes for beginning snowboarders to learn on.

The whitetail deer hunting in the remote areas surrounding Buffalo brings in some monster bucks. Actually this is a late fall sport more so than winter. The season ends in most areas before winter officially starts. The deer population has exploded over recent years to provide a hunting environment that is like shooting fish in a barrel. This sport is so popular that many area high schools are sparsely populated during the first week of shotgun season.

For kids, the winters in Buffalo are great fun. There are a thousand ways for children to have fun outside in the cold. Some kids will do the traditional backyard sledding. Others will find a giant snow drift to carve a tunnel into. There is the ever popular snowball fight with other neighborhood kids. For active kids there is a new sport called pond hockey. Actually it is an old kids playtime activity turned into a sport. There are lots of really great parks that allow families to go tobogganing for free. You really don't have to think very long to come up with a great way to enjoy the winter when you are in Buffalo.
