A Cheers for Beer!

By Mara Hernandez-Capili

Beer is an alcoholic drink that is usually made from malted barley, hops, yeast and water. In some countries, other cereal grains especially maize are used instead or in addition to barley. Beer includes such food substances as carbohydrates, protein and some various vitamins. Most beer contain from 2.5 to 6 per cent alcohol by volume. This is produced by the process called fermentation.

In Haverhill, Massachusetts they hold the annual Beer Fest. This for them is the coolest fiesta, especially to the beer advocates. It is an affair where breweries and their most knowledgeable staffs get together. Booths of different breweries are put up and available for inquiries, so they better have the best person behind every bar.

Beer fest is not always about drinking till you drop celebration, it is more of getting to know your favorite beers and have them the more enjoyable way. It is a tribute to all locals and international beers

The festival gives us overview on the know-how of beer, giving the patrons the information on how to really taste and savor a series of beer available from around the globe while getting a bit of education on how beers are made from barley, malts and its origins. In there we will also learn how to detect the tinge of each beer. Besides its focus on beer, the fest also pays tribute to bands and beer friendly foods. The event is usually a one day event so everyone has got to experience what they call "rounds".

It is a one of a kind experience for first timers, for the advocates it is simply their day, a 2 oz. marker is set on a glass making it the exact amount to weigh a beers consistency and taste. Tasting and scoring sheets are distributed to make everyone remember what they liked and what they don't. Beer is a very social thing, there nothing better than a good beer and a great conversation. But of course drink it with cautiousness.
