Travel Advice

By Keri T Lambretta

Travel is an incredible way to enrich your life and broaden your perspectives. It is not without potential downsides, though, so before departing on a trip it is important to plan carefully and be prepared for all possible situations. This article will provide you with a wide range of tips to make the most out of your travel experiences.

When you are flying internationally, pack light. There are many reasons for this, but the most rewarding reason is that you will have room to bring home gifts from your travels. Your friends and family will love you for it. You will also save money on bag fees when you depart.

Always pack empty plastic bags in various sizes when you travel. They will come in handy for all sorts of situations, including wet swimming suits when checking out of your hotel, protection against leaking bottles of lotions or shampoos, and transporting hand-washed articles of clothing that have not quite dried before departure time.

While traveling to a foreign country is an exciting experience, it can also be risky if you aren't familiar with its laws and customs. For that purpose, the State Department of the United States created a website (travel.state.gov) that you can visit to find out a wealth of information on the country to which you are traveling, including facts on crime, health conditions and popular attractions.

To capture all of the great memories of your travels on camera, be sure to carry a few extra charged batteries. If you are traveling overseas, you cannot always be sure your charger will work, or that the adapter will fit the plugs. Batteries are small and light weight, so save yourself the hassle of finding disposable cameras by taking an extra battery or two.

If you will be driving when you travel to another country, take the time to contact your insurance carrier. They can give you any needed documentation that pertains to your insurance coverage, any additional insurance you may need and much needed advice or information about regulations for driving at your destination.

Do not take any drinks that are offered to you unless it is served by a restaurant or hotel. They could be laced with drugs or other harmful substances. This is because many locals like to drug tourists or lace their drinks in order to steal from them or take advantage of them.

Avoid crowds and save money by visiting in the off-season. If you want to be able to enjoy your vacation without having to battle a crowd of people everywhere you go, learn when the popular months are for the location and plan your vacation for the less popular time. Be aware, while it can save you money, in some locations you may have to contend with less than ideal weather.

To save money on baggage fees, you should weigh your baggage before leaving home. You can buy a good luggage scale for less than twenty dollars, and it could help you save big on airline baggage fees. If your bag is over the weight limit at home, it is easy to move things around or take something out, but it is much harder to fix a weight problem once you are already at the airport.

One way to travel and stay that is becoming very popular at the moment is 'glamping'. It is a cross between camping and hosteling where everything is provided for you but on a luxury basis! Well worth checking out!
