By Tyler Ramos

Pedasi is a town located in the southeastern area of the Azuero Peninsula, which is located in the Pacific coast of Panama. It is within the Pedasi District, which is part of the Los Santos province. The town is primarily a fishing area and has a population estimated at only 2000 people.

The small village includes several restaurants, shops and supermarkets, two banks, and one library and health clinic. There is cable, Internet and telephone service available throughout the jurisdiction. The area is known for hosting annual carnivals, its pristine beaches, and water-related activities, such as surfing, sports fishing and diving. It is also located near many of national preserves and parks of Panama.

The land is known for its clean streets and beautiful Spanish colonial-inspired architecture. The town includes a primary road, plaza and several civic facilities that are surrounded by residential properties. The Pedasi reputation is positive, as it is known for being a main attraction in the Los Santos region. The village can be accessed within a five-hour drive from Panama City. There is even a small airstrip that accepts charter and private planes.

This land is surrounded by beaches. This is why many tourists choose this town when seeking out a place for water activities and sports. Surfing is among the biggest of attractions, particularly at the beach called Playa Venao. Mot surfers will find that most beaches offer a decent set up to catch waves. Sport fishing is also quite popular. Pelagic game fish are common in the region because the continental shelf drops off near the shore. Some year-round fish for this area: snapper, amberjack, grouper, sailfish, and roosterfish. Seasonal catch: yellowfin tuna, bigeye tuna and wahoo.

From Playa El Arenal people can take a short boat ride over to the island wildlife refuge known as Isla Iguana. The island is surrounded by coral reef and therefore filled with beaches of white sand. Several exotic species of sea turtles, rays, reptiles, rays, fish, and birds are found in this habitat.

Pedasi townspeople are known for being friendly and laidback. They are accepting of visitors. Many local men wear folkloric hats that are black and white, and traditional sandals known as cuttaras. Women dress in traditional clothes as well, especially during big celebrations when they wear handmade pieces with very intricate designs.

In the month of February, a yearly carnival is hosted. This is a major event in the local scene. During this time, the town is split into two areas, the upper street, Calle Arriba and the lower street, Calle Abajo. Each of the areas has its own queen whose mission is it to outshine the other queen when it comes to the best display of floats, music and fireworks. Following the celebrations, the winning queen is selected based on the popular vote.

Pedasi is a town of 2000 people located within Panama. Despite its small size, the area is lively and brings many new visitors from around the world. Foreigners and locals enjoy the land because of water activities available, such as fishing, surfing and diving. Most locals are nice and host cultural celebrations every year.
