Venice Cheap Things to Do

By Barbra Sundquist

Visiting Venice on a budget? There are plenty of things to do in Venice that don't involve spending money or waiting in lineups.

There are enough canals, bridges and old buildings for you to visit every day for weeks. Not to mention shops and cafes at every corner.

The best thing you can do in Venice is just wander the streets. Try exploring it on your own without all the maps and lineups, and simply walk around.

Forget about your list of things you have to visit. Don't waste time in long lines in front of big attractions and go in if they are not too big. Otherwise, just keep walking!

The myriad streets and canals of Venice might make it seem like a big city, but it's actually smaller than you might think. The entire length of the the city can be walked in less than an hour. A good idea is to take Number 82 vaporetto (public transit water bus) full circuit to enjoy and appreciate the many wonders of the city on the lagoon.

Speaking of riding the vaporetto, one of my favorite Venice things to do is to get on the #1 vaporetto and ride up and down the Grand Canal.

A Grand Canal vaporetto tour is a great budget alternative to the traditional gondola ride. Riding the vaporetto costs only a couple of euros, while a gondola ride costs over 100 euros. And let's admit it: a gondola ride is a pretty touristy thing to do.

Tons of things are waiting to be seen and done in Venice and you can do them just by taking the vaporetto and getting off to check out stops. Lots of stuff is waiting around at every stop, over every bridge and in every shop window. Take all the photos you like and try the amazing bakeries of Venice. You'll be amazed by hospitality of the local Venetians.
