Do Not Depart On Vacation Without Preparing Your Car

By Thanh Waughtel

Who doesn't dream about a grand getaway driving across the country? Whether you may travel with friends or family, or even on your own, there may be a long road trip coming up in your not too distant future. Many of us just jump in their cars and go, with very little or no planning. But your adventure might be more fun if you make some plans before you get started. Listed below are some pointers to be ready for anything that could happen along the way.

Make sure all of your maintenance is done and up to date to lessen the chances of car trouble. Change your oil and check the battery and tires. Carefully prepare and map your route so you will always know exactly where you are. Check ahead to find out if there's any road construction that could be a problem, and to see where you want to stop overnight. If you might be planning any off road activities, make certain and have maps for those areas. Knowing exactly where you are and where you're going will help you make wise decisions along the way. It is pretty obvious to be attentive, but a lot of accidents are caused by the inattention of drivers. You'll have a terrific time and a wonderful holiday if you've planned adequately and stay focused when driving.

Chatting on a cell phone at the wrong time is not good, but it might be a lifesaver, if anything ever happens, such as an accident. It is sensible to hold the phone close by, and know how it works, but don't use it for conversations while you are driving. Phones lead to accidents when being used in the car, but they're invaluable to have if you have car trouble. Seatbelts are usually a big lifesaver, and are required by most states, so start using yours. If you are out of the home, it is good to do things for proper protection against theft. Have a car alarm system put in if you do not have one, and use steering wheel locks and ignition system locks, as well as a tracking device.

In the event you get involved in a collision, consider taking whatever steps are essential to protect yourself and your passengers. Move your vehicle so it's not clogging up traffic, and be sure to turn it off so it will not overheat and start a fire. Make sure you warn the oncoming cars, and when this has all been done, make sure you call your insurance agency. In case your insurance coverage is not paid up and current, do not even leave home.

Make sure you've got all of your insurance material in the car, so you are going to know exactly what to do. You need to be ready. No one expects an accident, but should one occur it's way better to be prepared.
