Italy Audio Tours with Rick Steves

By Barbra Sundquist

If you are planning to go to Italy, do what I've done - go to Rick Steves site and download his audio tours of Rome, Florence and Venice for free. These free Italy audio tours are, actually the most important parts taken from the Rick Steve's guide books.

These audio tours are your private walking tours. You can also listen to them prior to visiting some places and get prepared. If you want a combination of history, architecture and regular life, this is it!

So what's included in these audio tours? Currently there are three major cities in Italy that Rick has recorded tours for: Venice, Florence and Rome.

Rick's Venice Audio Tours feature the Grand Canal Cruise, St. Mark's Square, St. Mark's Basilica, and Frari Church. The Florence Audio Tours take you on a tour of the Renaissance Walk, Accademia and Michelangelo's David, and Uffizi Gallery. The Rome Audio Tours are particularly good and include the Colosseum, Roman Forum, St. Peter's Basilica, Sistine Chapel, Trastevere Walk, Jewish Ghetto Walk, Ostia Antica, and Pompeii.

There are a variety of ways to access these audio tours. I downloaded them onto my iPod Touch directly from the RickSteves.com website. You can also download them from any podcast service (such as iTunes) or use the Rick Steves Audio Europe app. The app is perhaps the easiest and best experience if you have an iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, or Android.

Simply subscribe to Rick Steves' Rome Audio Tours on iTunes, Amazon or the equivalent Android store if you prefer podcasts.

It's possible to enjoy Rick Steves' tours even if you don't have an iPhone, iPad or some sort of Android. They can be easily taken in mp3 format that you can download to your mp3 device and listen to them from there.

Listening to the tours on your mp3 player comes with some problems. One of them is the lack of pictures in your tour experience. But don't worry, you actually won't lose out that much because even the iPad versions don't have that many pictures. They only illustrate some parts of the tour. Also, you won't have correct chapter breaks and subheadings, but that's not really that important for your tour.
