Historical Places To See When Visiting India

By Bobby Thompson

India is a mysterious land with a rich and vibrant history. Because of its abundance of natural resources and fertile soil, it is perfect for human habitation. It's been the site of some of the earliest civilizations in the world. In fact, its culture goes back more than 3000 years. Visitors to India can expect to be transported back to a magical time that is vastly different from their regular life.

When you visit India, there will be so much to see that you could take years and still not see it all. At the same time, there are some sites that are simply not to be missed:

The Kashmir Valley is a place of extreme beauty that has been called "heaven on earth." In fact, it is so spectacular that this is were Mughal emperors would come in their last days, maybe to be closer to the Divine.

Nothing beats the magnificence of the Himalayas, though, for sheer beauty. The breathtaking peaks, and the hundreds of lakes that pepper the valley, are a contrast to the thick forests that nearly cover the land.

Sadly, during the past two decades the valley saw violence and terrorist action. However, more recently these types of activities have become much less frequent. The area is once again deemed safe for tourists to visit.

You should also make it a point to visit the southernmost state in India, Kerala. This state, dubbed "God's own country," is full of natural beauty.

Kerala is heaven for the visitor who is thrilled with green lush surroundings. If you do get to this area, make it a point to have a trip over the backwaters in one of the luxury houseboats of this area. You will be glad you did.

The desert state of Rajasthan is also spectacular. This is the site where hundreds of royal kingdoms flourished years ago. It is known as the state of royalty. A tourist to the area can visit any number of glorious palaces, and can enjoy the sense of privilege from days gone by. Make sure also to see the nearby areas of Jodhpur and Jaipur.

At the heart of India, you will find the city of Madhya Pradesh. This area houses some of India's oldest cultural artifacts, as it is where one of India's oldest kingdoms flourished. It is also the birthplace of Buddhism. Clearly, Madhya Pradesh is historically important, and a must see for most any visitor.
