Boyne Falls As A Vacation Destination

By Carrie Haley

The plan to build a recreational trail joining Boyne City with Boyne Falls has been in the works for roughly ten years now. Yet lately a lot of dialogue seems to be devoted to this topic, leading to expectations that the project will in reality move forward shortly. The suggested trail would link Boyne City and the Lake Charlevoix shoreline to Boyne Falls. If this does come into being, this trail will enhance tourism in Boyne Falls quite significantly. Although no precise route has ever been plotted for the trail, there are lots of speculations.

Speculations About the Trail's Route

According to this report, Boyne City Planner Scott McPherson thinks that the railroad grade will probably be used. "It is probably the most plausible place", he says. The tracks of the railroad were removed several years back and the land was auctioned off. A few efforts were done in recent years to line up easements along this route but many challenges have come up. If this route is not a feasible one, then the trail could possibly be built to run along the M-75. It might take the form of a separate trail or be an extension of the highway itself. This recommendation too has given rise to its own share of concerns. The truth is that local children will use the trail and its close proximity to the highway could possibly be rather risky to them.

Boyne City, Boyne Falls and the Townships of Wilson and Boyne valley will all be active in the project if and when it does commence. While no concrete decision about the trail plan has emerged yet, resort owners and vacationers are hoping that it does happen. There are even a lot of locals who consider that being able to bike down the trail or walk down it could be a great summer time activity. Plainly, a recreational trail shall be good news for the tourism industry at Boyne Falls.
