Gay Travel Guide: Xcaret

By Ricardo d Argence

Gay and lesbian travelers love the Cancun area. Of all the gay travel destinations the world over, Cancun is one of the most popular of all. Whether it is tropical beaches full of hot bodies and friendly individuals or the rainbow friendly nightlife that allures them, we are not sure.

Anybody traveling to Cancun would be remiss in missing out on Xcaret, pronounced Eesh Kar Et. This is a type of amusement park, but likely unlike any amusement park that you have been to in your life.

It does not offer such thrill rides as the 40-story drops or chains and steel dragons. However, a nature-oriented adventure catches the attention of people of all ages.

So, what can you do at Xcaret? A better question would be what you can't do at Xcaret. This is a great place to just hang out on the beach, but one can do that anywhere.

While you are visiting here, you can share in the experience of an Xcaret adventure. Whether you choose to snorkel, scuba dive, helmet dive or swim with the dolphins, you will enjoy yourself. Xcaret is infamous for its underground rivers that present you the opportunity to snorkel in a uniquely new way.

If you are an avid sightseer, you will enjoy Xcaret coral reef aquarium and zoo exhibits. When you want to connect with and learn about nature, this is the best place to do it.

While you are at Xcaret, you may see an assortment of wildlife including, but not limited to monkeys, manatees, flamingos, sea turtles and jaguars.

While immersing yourself into the Mexican culture, there several exhibits relating to the riding and roping of Mexican cowgirls and cowboys. You may wish to visit the replicas of an ancient Mayan village, a traditional Mexican tomb or even a wine cellar full of tasty vintage Mexican wines.

For those who love the Mexican food in Cancun, they won't be disappointed with what Xcaret has to offer with its 11 dining rooms. Authentic Mexican fare can be found at each of these 11 restaurants, some of them famous for their more interesting and less traditional fare, such as fried crickets.

You will enjoy your day of adventure; however, Xcaret admission is not cheap. Adult admission is approximately $69 and admission for children is approximately $35.

The Xcaret lies along the 40 miles of Cancun coastline. It offers lesbian and gay travelers and their families a wonderful place to hang out, while more than likely meeting up with members of the rainbow family is very possible.
