Different Vacations In Scotland

By Andrew Kelly

Scotland offers the most glorious countryside to be found in the United Kingdom making it the greatest holiday destination. Countless numbers of tourists opt for Edinburgh as their main destination, whereas others choose something a bit different. The following takes a look at Scottish vacations and a variety of things to do while in Scotland. The article also looks at the Wickerman Festival.

With such an immensely diverse countryside the selection of things to do is endless. Mountain climbing is highly popular, as are mountain biking vacations. The most common holidays are fishing or golf. With the country of Scotland being the home of golfing it should not be surprising that you are hardly ever too distant from a minimum of one world class golf course. With the River Tay and the River Spey you can almost be certain of a superb day fishing. But what if you want something a little different?

Increasing numbers of families are making music festivals their yearly vacation. Although nearly all music festivals are huge with the main aim of making money, there are a small selection of family orientated music festival, for example the Wickerman Festival and Tartan Heart.

The Wickerman Festival is an annual music and arts festival is held on a farm close to Dundrennan in the heart of Dumfries & Galloway approximately 5 miles away from the Scottish town of Kirkcudbright. The festival celebrates the cult British film "The Wicker Man which features appearances by Edward Woodward, Sir Christopher Lee, Britt Ekland, Ingrid Pitt and Diane Cilento.

The very first festival took place in 2002 and was organized by Sid Ambrose, a local guy. With little experience of arranging a music festival it is a surprise that it still exists today, especially when you consider the current economic climate. The festival has changed each year and, like the film, has a cult following.

The festival is hugely family friendly it has a great many activities for children including, a mountain biking trek, numerous fairground rides, face painting and various workshops. This can be easily proven by simply searching for Wickerman Festival 2009 photographs or simply pop along to the official Wickerman Festival Gallery.

Close to the site of the festival is the village of Kirkudbright where you will find many of the locations used in the film for example Harbour Cottage (the bakery) and High Street Gallery which was used for May Morrison's post office and sweetshop. You will find that there are a great many places of interest in Dumfries and Galloway and it is really worth taking a short break here so that you may visit all of the visitor attractions. Common destinations in which to stay include Castle Douglas and Dumfries. Bed and breakfast accommodation in Scotland is always excellent and is also very affordable and far less expensive than staying in a hotel.
