Short Breaks in Sheffield and Tourist Attractions Well Worth Seeing

Today UK vacations are all the rage. The many reasons are complex but most agree that the most influencing factor is the downturn in the economy and the increasing need to save money, especially in relation to vacations. A further influencing factor is the decreased value of the English Pound which makes travel abroad expensive for the English but travel into Britain is cheap. The UK has many top tourist destinations including a decent selection of seaside resorts, however more folk are deciding to take city breaks instead. Popular cities include; York, Manchester and Birmingham however there are many other cities in Great Britain in which to have a short vacation for example Sheffield. With rooms from as low as 20 a night, Sheffield bed and breakfast makes for a low cost city vacation destination.

Tourist Attractions In Sheffield

For a city with an industrial past primarily in the cutlery and steel industries, Sheffield sports a superb variety of galleries. The most popular are the Ruskin Gallery, Site Gallery and Millennium Galleries. The Millennium Galleries are free to enter and have visiting exhibitions (the entry fee for these are usually a few pounds. The Ruskin Gallery is founded upon a collection given by John Ruskin for the improvement of the Sheffield workers and includes sketches, paintings, casts, watercolors, minerals and a library of classic nineteenth century texts.

You will find that Sheffield is home to a few museums however the City Museum is on the outskirts of the center of the city as is the Kelham Island Museum which is home to all manner of objects associated with the industrial past of the city and old machines. Even though Sheffield was bombed heavily during World War Two several superb examples of Victorian and older architecture survive and the center of the city is incredibly easy to walk around. Attempt to allow time to see the city's Cathedral of St Peter and St Paul which dates back to the fifteenth century.

Staying In Sheffield

As the city has a University the cafes, bars and clubs can become incredibly busy at the weekends, when students make the most their spare time. While lots of folk enjoy such a vibrant nightlife others would rather a more sedate place in which to stay, such people should book a room in a hotel away from the city center.

If a weekend city break in Sheffield is not your kind of thing why not think about booking a few days in a London bed and breakfast, the capital city of England? Alternatively why not consider booking a few days in a Liverpool hotel, which was the European Capital of Culture in 2008 and benefits from a fantastic selection of world class visitor attractions.

Great Britain has much to offer the visitor and the numerous incredibly interesting, and very diverse, cities commonly offer more than the many seaside resorts.
