Now that Inverness is no longer a town (it's a city) Fort William is the largest town in the Highlands of Scotland. The town of Fort William is a massively popular vacation destination with a great many visitors arriving to go hill walking on Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Scotland and the British Isles.
In the following article I examine three different visitor attractions well worth a visit if you are spending some time in Fort William.
The Incredibly Interesting West Highland Museum
Founded in 1922 was the West Highland Museum in Fort William. A group of people from Lochaber wanted to create a museum, about life in the Highlands, for the people of the Highlands. The present building was purchased in 1926 from the British Linen Bank, and can be found in Cameron Square, just off the Hight Street. Fascinating and small is how some people describe the museum. The collections in the museum present a fascinating look into the way of life in the West Highlands over the years. People from all walks of life are represented, through the fascinating collections of artefact's, photograph's and picture's
The Grand Old Inverlochy Castle
There are two Inverlochy Castle's in Fort William, the Old Inverlochy Castle and the new Victorian, chateau-style Inverlochy Castle, constructed in nearby Torlundy (which is now a luxurious hotel). The Old castle was said to of been constructed around 1270-1280, by John "the Black" Comyn, Lord of Badenoch and Lochaber, and chief of the Clan Comyn. Although the castle is in ruins, the layout hasn't altered very much since it was built. Lord Abinger carried out enhancements and alterations to the house, for a visit by Queen Victoria. Old Inverlochy Castle is still an important part of Scottish and English history, because of the role it played during the Civil Wars of the 1640's.
The Fascinating Jacobite Steam Train
A trip on the Jacobite Steam Train, is an exciting way to experience the breathtaking scenery of the Highlands. The Fort William to the port of Mallaig journey takes you on a breathtaking tour through the glens. One of the most sensational elements of the trip is traveling over the Glenfinnan Viaduct, which most folk will recognize thanks to the fact that it has appeared in the movies of the exploits of Harry Potter. The 84 mile trip takes you past Loch Morar, Loch Nevis and Ben Nevis, with a stop in Glenfinnan before arriving in Mallaig. There is about an hour and half in which to look around Mallaig, before the return journey, back to Fort William. This journey has often been declared, one of the Great Railway Journeys of the planet.
The town of Fort William has plenty more nearby visitor attractions but a great many visitors decide to make Fort William a base for a touring vacation of the Scottish Highlands. An incredibly popular vacation destination is Inverness and a cool thing to do it spend a week in both. Virtually all places you visit will have masses of literature~leaflets and literature~pamphlets showing numerous other places to visit nearby so there is always lots to see and do.
