The Mapes Hotel: Reno's Lost Art Deco Jewel

By Ross Everett

On January 31, 2000, the historic Mapes Hotel in Reno was imploded by 75 pounds of explosives tucked into the art-deco structures support columns. The destruction of the Mapes put an end to years of efforts to preserve the building via lawsuits, redevelopment proposals, and grass roots action. The National Trust for Historic Preservation took up the cause of the Mapes, and challenged the destruction in a suit that eventually reached the Nevada Supreme Court.

While the efficacy and justification of demolishing the Mapes is debatable, one thing that is not is the glorious history of the hotel. It was built in 1947, and signaled the start of the modern era of casino gambling. Despite the notoriety of Bugsy Siegel and the Flamingo in Las Vegas, it was the Mapes that became the first building in the nation to have a hotel, casino and live entertainment under one roof. It also became the hotel of choice for celebrities staying in Northern Nevada. Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe stayed at The Mapes during the filming of 'The Misfits'. Joseph McCarthy, America's famed anti-Communist crusader, admitted to a reporter over cocktails in the Mapes Lounge that he really didn't have a list of Communists in the US despite his frequent and vitriolic insistence to the contrary.

During the 'Rat Pack' era of the 50's and 60's it became along with the Cal-Neva Lodge in Lake Tahoe the place to be seen in Northern Nevada. The 11th floor, window walled Sky Room Lounge hosted performances by a roster of entertainment legends including Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Dean Martin, Louis Prima, Keely Smith, Milton Berle and Mae West. Downtown Reno struggled during the 1960's and 70's but the Mapes continued to prosper. The hotel finally closed in 1982, due to financial problems experienced by the Mapes Family brought about by their other Northern Nevada casino holdings.

While the last twenty years brought an amazing boom in the population and economy of Southern Nevada, the Northern part of the state didn't see much of it at all. For that reason, the urgency of destroying the Mapes is even more questionable. In the Las Vegas area, its easy to justify the demolition of older hotels with simple economics--the older properties simply can't compete in the current mega-resort dominated marketplace. Furthermore, the insane valuation of the land on which they sit makes it financially unfeasible to preserve them as pop culture museums.

That's not the case in Reno, where vacant land and/or buildings ripe for redevelopment are abundant downtown and in the other casino areas of the city. The official reason that the Mapes had to come down was that the city needed the land to expand its vision for downtown redevelopment. While this is certainly a much needed effort, to suggest that the existence of the Mapes was a barrier is absurd. In fact, many of the proposals rejected by the city would have gone a long way to enhance the revitalization of downtown Reno and included artists lofts, office space and other mixed used properties. Despite receiving a number of viable concepts for the Mapes Building, the City Redevelopment Authority rejected all of them and the Mapes was destined for demolition.

The role of the City Redevelopment Authority was questioned throughout the process. Overlooking the Truckee River, the hotel was on a prime location between the downtown casino area and the riverfront district. Back in 1996, the city of Reno purchased the hotel and began entertaining proposals for renovation and redevelopment. A number of sound financial proposals were presented that would preserve the integrity of the structure including condominiums, office space, and perhaps most viable, upscale senior apartments. Oddly, all of these proposals were turned down by the citys Redevelopment Agency which eventually led to the demolition of the structure.

After the demolition of The Mapes Hotel, the lot remained vacant for almost a year until a temporary ice skating rink was constructed in the winter of 2001. The site now houses a permanent ice skating rink which, while not a bad use for the land, brings into question the insistence by the City Redevelopment Agency that none of the proposals to preserve the building were viable. Clearly, they had no specific plan or even general idea of what to do with the land but for some reason wanted to see the hotel come down. This has led to all manner of speculation, ranging from financial self interest to a rumor that the structure was 'haunted' and needed to be destroyed to forestall future paranormal activity in Washoe County. Whatever the reason, the city of Reno lost a valuable landmark of a more civilized era.

Things To Do On The Gold Coast

By Damian Papworth

I had to get up early this morning and get down to Coolangatta Beach. One of my surfboard hire clients was checking out early and needed 1 minimal and 1 short board picked up before they left. So up I got, arriving in Cooly before 7am.

On the Australian Gold Coast, Coolangatta is roughly a 30 minute drive headed south out of Surfer's Paradise, both places being world-renowned thanks to the impressive surf conditions they present. Surfer's Paradise, located at the northern tip really does have some of the most spectacular of the Goldy's beach breaks thanks to the shifting sand-based ocean floor, which gives a lot of swell.

Coolangatta, on the other hand, is farther to the south and more known for its point breaks, particularly at sites like Kirra, Snapper Rocks and Greenmount. Despite lacking the swell of the waves at Surfer's Paradise, the waves at these breaks are without a doubt the best in the area. On the right day, the waves continue to bend around the point all day long without interruption. After a full and tiring day of surf, a surfer can easily kick off a wave rather than having it end on them.

That's not the case this morning however. Upon arrival, the waves stood at less than one foot tall and nice and clean, though without a hint of wind. Having scooped the surfboard rentals I stopped in for a bite to eat at a pleasant little cafe with the idea of observing what our beaches are like when there is no surfing to be done.

It didn't take me long at all to realize just why the Australian Gold Coast, in the northern Queensland state, is among the most frequented beach destinations on the planet. At little past 7 o'clock in the morning the beach front is already thriving with activity; for sure, 24 water helps a lot just as the 26 air temperature does--who wouldn't be inclined to spend a day on the beach in those conditions?

A few Polynesian-style surfers are out on the water--the stand-up paddling kind--with some longboarders, too. Folks are already taking a dip close to shore between the flag markers, catching tiny breakers that wash right up to the beach.

At Coolangatta beach, the water is met by about 50 meters of clean golden sand. There are already a couple of groups of girls out in their bikinis, improving their tans. Ha, this early it must be their last day of vacation here and they want to get that last bit of sun before they go home.

Small groups of runners and cyclists whiz past on the designated park tracks, some early morning exercise. And far out in the ocean, there is a school of whales making quite a splash on their migrations, much to the amazement of many passersby.

I observe this all from a chic little cafe, where a pretty waitress serves me my latte and eggs benedict. As a local, sometimes it is time well spent just to sit back, recognize and soak up the things that so many other people travel the world to come here and enjoy. I hope you manage to share the beauty of our home one day too. Life really doesn't get much better than this.

In as Little as 24 Hours, Expedited Passports Can Be Yours

By Walter Witt

Your hopes for a beautiful Caribbean vacation sank right into the ocean the moment you check your passport's expiration date. Your ship sails in less than a week. Are you going to have to leave this cruise on the shore?

Don't jump ship if you need a passport in a hurry. Expedited passports can be gotten with in 24 hours even, although having at least a week to work with will save you money. 24 hour passports are readily available, for a small extra service fee.

Choosing the right service depends on your time frame. If you have at least 7 to 10 days, standard services work fine. Rush service can provide passports in 4 to 6 business days, while urgent services deliver a passport to your hands within 24 hours.

Aside from the prompt service, passport companies also offer immense convenience. Processing forms get pretty complicated and are best left to professionals, simplifying your headaches. With all the packing you have to do, the last thing you need is complicated forms to worry about.

Proper documentation needs to be provided for any name changes. For most cases, you don't even have to visit the agency and can provide all the information online. Check with the agency ahead of time, however, just to be sure.

Government agencies may be cheaper, but you pay in bureaucracy and delays, which are common. Even expedited passports can take as long as two weeks, sometimes even longer.

With a professional service, you can get expedited passports as soon as you need them. 24 hour passports are standard fare for this industry.

Get your passport when you need it, and then get back to packing. Sunrise ocean sands await your bare toes in tropical paradise.

A Trip to Peru it Will Put a Good Dent in your Bucket List

By Deb Corbeil

Everyone at one point or another has taken the time to make a life list. The inspiring and fantastic movie with Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman The Bucket List illustrated an amazing journey for two aging men that decided to take their life by the reigns and actually start checking off the things that they wanted to see and do. If you have started your own "Bucket List" and don't know where to begin checking them off, a great country to start at is in Peru. Not only is it an exotic and fascinating historical destination, it also has many exciting and adventurous things to do.

Filled with incredible scenery, famous sights and offering several adrenaline filled activities Peru is the perfect choice to start checking off the things that you have always wanted to see and do but were too afraid to try. It doesn't take long before you have actually made it through a large chunk of your list during your stay.

Everyone on the planet wants to see one of the great ruins of the world. The Pyramids, Angkor Wat or Tikal are just a few of the famous destinations. At the top of many people's must see ruin is Machu Picchu. Nestled high in the Andes Mountains of Peru, at 2500 meters it is certainly the most extraordinary ruin on the planet. How did the Incas build this incredible complex so high on the side of a cliff? Built in the 1400s Machu Picchu is remarkably well preserved. Arriving early in the morning, it is shrouded in cloud, but as the sun rises and burns off the fog, a majestic vision unfolds. 200 buildings, terraced high on the side of the mountain surrounded by jungle, vegetation and clear blue skies. You can either hike the Inca trail for another exciting activity to add to your list and visit ancient trails used by the Inca's or you can take a magical train ride through the Andes Mountain witnessing incredible scenery. Whichever way you choose, you will come away with memories to last a lifetime and a travel on your list that many people in this world only dream of doing.

So often people want to skydive or bungee jump at least once in their life. Well in Lima Peru, you can get the best of both by Paragliding high in the sky. Walk down to the waterfront and follow the trail of parachutes above to the landing and take off point near situated on a high cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. For $20 you will be harnessed up to an experienced para-glider and the next thing you know you are running off the end of a cliff waiting for the wind to whisk you into the air. It is an adventure of a lifetime flying over skyscrapers, doing maneuvers over the surf and floating high into the sky.

Many people have never seen a desert. If you visit Peru, you will not only be treated to seeing an absolutely beautiful desert, but you will witness some of the largest sand dunes in the entire world. Take a dune buggy out to explore everything it has to offer. Don't drive yourself however as desert driving can be tricky. Hire a driver or take a tour and they will give you the thrill of your life. Racing at top speeds your will climb giant dunes only to plunge down a near vertical cliff into the valley below. Don't forget to try your hand at sand boarding while you are out there. Feel like a kid again as you roll down the gigantic dunes or use your board as a sled to zip to the bottom.

Speaking of deserts, how often does a person get to see a true Oasis. Located right in the heart of the Ica Region is the small oasis town of Huacachina. The Oasis of America is a perfect place to spend a few days. Relax on the banks of the Oasis to catch some sun or enjoy a non motorized boat ride on the water. The giant dunes surround this village and it is a sight that will be burned into your memory for the rest of your life.

If wild life is on your list, you will be in for a real treat when you visit Isla Ballestas. Located near Pisco, you can catch a tour boat to take you out to sea to view sea lions, penguins, Peruvian boobies and condors as well as millions of birds in this nature reserve. Your boat will take you out to beautiful rock formations located off shore where wildlife is free to live and play in a protected area. Take the once in a lifetime opportunity to see actual penguins play in their natural setting and watch the hundreds of sea lions bask in the sun on the beach or on the rocks. You will not be disappointed, although make sure to ask your operator if they are sensitive to the animal and do not take their boats too close to shore disrupting the wildlife with exhaust pollution and the loud engines of the boats. Responsible tourism is a must.

One could write a book about all of the things there are to see and do in Peru. These are only a few suggestions to help you check off our life list. But there are many other things that you can do in this vast and interesting country. Take a trip to the rainforest and explore the jungle, hop on a flight over the mystical Nazca Lines. Nobody can explain how these giant etchings in the desert have survived for over 2000 years or why they are even there. Heat south to the Bolivian border and see famous Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, or climb one of Peru's many 5000 + meter mountains.

So go to Peru soon and start living that life list rather than just dreaming about it. What are you waiting for? Go out there and start your life list. Life is short so you better get going and visiting Peru is a quick and easy way to check off a lot of dreams and wishes in a short amount of time.

Staying In Sac

By James Pynn

It should come as no surprise that the Golden State is shot-through with big cities. From San Francisco to Los Angeles to Newport Beach and back up the coast again, there are no shortages of big cities to choose from. To be sure, smaller college towns like Berkeley, Davis, and Irvine also get folded into the Golden State batter. With all of these options, what makes Sacramento the capitol?

Christened by the stalwart Gabriel Moraga, Sacramento was little more than a trading post when John Sutter arrived in 1839 from Switzerland. Within ten years he and his heirs would guide the transformation of the trading post into a military barracks for the U.S. Army and eventually into an incorporated city. Sacramento is the oldest incorporated city in the state, having been invested in 1850. This does not mean it is the oldest, however, as that distinction belongs to Monterey.

After the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), the capital of California was moved from Monterey. The first city to be designated the new capitol was San Jose. When the state legislature met there in 1850, it was argued the capitol should be moved further inland to avoid retribution either from Mexico or the Spanish Empire.

James Marshall, two years earlier, famously discovered gold in the American River in Coloma, about 50 miles away from Sacramento. In the years that followed, Sacramento became the inheritor of the California Gold Rush. The city flooded with new residents and economic prosperity. As evidence of Sacramentos growing importance, the Transcontinental Railroad terminated in the city, solidifying it stature as the gateway city to California.

After abortive stints in Vallejo and Benicia, the capitol was moved, finally, to Sacramento in 1854. Taking advantage of the citys tremendous infrastructure and rail access, the Constitutional Convention named Sacramento the permanent capitol of California in 1879. Inspired by the nations capitol, the California State Capitol was not actually completed until 1874, where it stands to this day in tribute to the vision and foresight of John Sutter.

What is the most important ingredient for an unforgettable romantic vacation? Out-of-the-way accommodations? Excellent food? Spectacular scenery? Fun couple activities? If you answered yes to one or all of these, then you might want to consider heading to Europe for European romantic getaways. After all, Europe is home to some of the most romantic places in the world.

Most Romantic City - Prague

The city of Prague, which is the capital of the Czech Republic, is considered one of the most romantic places in the world, and is therefore, a top honeymoon destination. During the day, you can visit many amazing attractions, such as Prague Castle and the St. Nicolas Cathedral. At night, you can enjoy a quiet stroll on winding cobblestone streets lit by old-fashioned street lamps, snuggle in a horse-drawn carriage or take a rowboat down the Vltava River while soaking up the rich, romantic atmosphere.

There are many other romantic cities in Europe, such as Bruges in Belgium, Tallinn in Estonia, Florence and Rome in Italy, and Paris in France. These cities all offer many magnificent attractions that provide the perfect setting for European romantic getaways, whether by day or night.

The Hotel de la Cite, Carcassonne

There are many romantic hotels in Europe but if you really want to be treated like royalty or get a fairy tale experience, staying at the Hotel de la Cite is a fantastic idea. Located in Carcassonne, France, the Hotel de la Cite is actually a well-preserved castle located in a medieval citadel, which means you'll get to enjoy spectacular views while going up and down spiral staircases and strolling through formal gardens. The individually furnished hotel rooms and suites are equipped with the latest amenities, though, including Wi-Fi access, satellite TV, a video recorder and even a laptop computer available upon request.

Le Manoir aux Quat Saisons, Oxfordshire

For a gastronomic treat in a truly romantic setting, let your European romantic getaways take you to the Le Manoir restaurant. Although tucked away in the village of Oxfordshire in southeast England, the Le Manoir is well-known throughout the world for its excellent cuisine designed by master chef Raymond Blanc. In fact, it has received two Michelin stars - a recognition reserved only for restaurants that offer great food, service and ambience.

Most Romantic Beach - Papa Cove

Europe also has many wonderful beaches and coves for those who love soaking up the sun and the sand, such as the Papa Cove on the eastern shore of the Ios island in Greece. This cove offers warm golden sands, calm crystal waters that are perfect for swimming and most importantly, walls of rock that provide a sanctuary for lovers, shielding them from the noise and the crowds of nearby beaches.

Skiing at St. Moritz

Ski resorts can also be great destinations for European romantic getaways, particularly the St. Moritz ski resort in Switzerland. Aside from being one of the best ski resorts in the world for its great slopes, St. Moritz also offers plenty of restaurants, shops and hotels - all with panoramic views of the unparalleled Engadine countryside.

These are just some of the most romantic places in Europe, which are great destinations or stops for European romantic getaways. While all these are exceptional settings for dates and honeymoons, though, keep in mind that the most important ingredient for a romantic vacation is a harmonious couple and as long as you and your partner are in love, you can make any place and any moment romantic, no matter where or when it may be.

5 Reasons Travel Incentives Work

By Jared Wingerson

Who does not like to travel to distant places with their family members and enjoy their vacations? The answer is everyone likes to enjoy their holidays by traveling to interesting places with their family members. Travel incentives are a great way to turn your prospect to your customer and turn your customer to your client. Travel incentives are a great way to turn your employees into loyal employees. Travel incentives can be more results oriented if associated with some accessories. Travel incentives offered by businesses work according to the following requirements because of the reasons described below.

Luxury - One major reason why travel incentives work and change the behaviors of consumers is luxury. Luxury may be in the form of experience or product. It need not be very costly but it should be something that would make the recipients happy and provide them a pleasant atmosphere. You should decide to increase its cost only after thorough analysis. A package associated with the luxury of a 2 nights stay at a luxurious hotel that the consumer would not have purchased for themselves, can greatly enhance their experience.

Popularity - The travel incentives that your business provides to your customers and employees are like a reward for them. For your customers, this reward is a result of their trust in you. For your employees, this reward is the result of their services provided to your business. To save money, you should not compromise the quality of these travel incentives, because the higher the quality, the more clients and trusted employees will come to your business.

Experience - Your customers and employees will retain the experience that you deliver to them in the form of travel incentives or travel incentives with some gifts. So this experience should be something that they can enjoy with full confidence and remember it throughout their life so their experience is unique and memorable. You should offer a unique experience and you can make it unique by adding something extra such as tickets to a show of any great performer.

Flexibility and Choice - If you can add the attributes of flexibility and choice to your travel incentives then it will be more valuable to the recipients. You can make the travel incentives more useful if you allow the recipients to decide the time and place. Recipients will be more comfortable if they can decide the dates that fit in their schedule.

Value - The travel incentives need not be more costly to increase sales of your product or services or boost morale of your employees but it should be something that can create implied value and your customers and employees perceive your travel incentive efforts as extremely important. This value is immeasurable.

Tips To Choosing A Restaurant When Vacationing

By Amy Nutt

One of the most loved activities when on a vacation is dining at restaurants. Most people enjoy trying new food at the local cuisines. When on vacation, it can often be a bit of a chore to find the most popular and high-quality restaurants. Not every place has a high standard of restaurant health laws, so one has to make sure they do not eat somewhere and end up getting very ill. Not only would it be a miserable experience, but it would ruin the vacation. It is important to have a good idea of what type of restaurant you will be dining at before you actually sit down and order.

Below is a list of tips that will help you choose a quality restaurant on your next vacation:

1. The Hotel staff is usually made up of local residents so they can provide you with information about the best restaurants in the area. They will also know of the various types of restaurants such as Mexican, Italian-etc.

2. Hotels usually carry local tourist guide books that are filled with valuable information about restaurants. If they do not have a guidebook, check the local tourist bureau. Guidebooks will often contain restaurant reviews.

3. If you ask the locals in the area, they will know all of the best restaurants to eat. You can ask store staff, local bar staff, taxi driver-etc. They can also let you know about the costs and if it is a formal or informal restaurant.

4. You can also walk or drive around to find restaurants. Many restaurants post their menus in the front so you can browse to see if there is anything you like. Avoid restaurants with unattractive and unprofessional menus. If you are concerned about the cleanliness of the restaurant, check out the washrooms. If they are dirty, then that may be a reflection of the quality of the restaurant. If the restaurant has tables outside, walk near the tables and steal a peek at what people are eating. Do the customers look happy? Does their food look tempting? If the restaurant is full of tourists or quite expensive, then it will most likely cater to tourists. You should also note how many people are actually dining at the restaurant. If there are not that many people dining, you may want to keep looking.

5. You can also do some online research. There are many websites and blogs that contain information about restaurants. Some sites even post restaurant reviews. As well, some sites will have pictures of the inside of the restaurant.

6. When you enter a restaurant, look for grimy walls, dirty floors, and anything else that may appear unsanitary. As well, look at the wait staffs uniforms. Are they clean and pressed?

When on vacation, people want to relax, take in the sights, and enjoy quality food. By taking the time to learn how to find a great restaurant, you will spend much less of your vacation wandering around looking for a good place to eat.

Llandudno's beautiful promenade is framed beautifully between the two spectacular headlands known as The Great and Little Ormes. Llandudno promenade's is lined with Victorian hotels and the character has been carefully preserved over the decades by the town council. None of the usual tourist shops and amusement arcades that you'll find on most promenade's are present on Llandudno's promenade resulting in a truly relaxing and very pleasant location to enjoy Llandudno's beautiful bay.

For a relaxing walk and excellent views of Llandudno and the Great Orme take a stroll along Llandudno's Victorian pier. There's a small number of stalls are dotted along the pier selling a mixture of tourist items and there's plenty of attractions for children from amusement arcades to rides. There's excellent views of Llandudno's promenade and Happy Valley from the pier and if you look closely you'll see the cable cars heading to and from the Great Orme summit.

Llandudno cable car is Britain's longest cable car ride and takes you from the foot of the Great Orme at Happy Valley to the summit over 600 feet above sea level. You can easily fit a family of two adults and two to three children in the cable car comfortably or up to four adults. From the summit on a clear day you can easily see the mountains of Snowdonia and the Isle of Anglesey to the west. There's also a visitor centre and a playground and amusement centre.

Another way to get up and down to the Great Orme summit is via Llandudno's tram. A great attraction near the summit of the Great Orme is the Great Orme Copper Mines. The Marvels Of Chicago Attractions

By Burt Clarkson

Chicago is a world in its own that first time visitors find themselves not knowing where to begin their exploration. For starters on discovering Chicago attractions, you can visit the John Hancock Observatory or the Chicago occupational health services Skydeck over at the Sears Tower to have a dramatic overview of Chicagoland.

Next you might want to discover your roots, if they come from this part of the country that is. Regardless, take a walk on Navy Pier. You'll find the TimeScape that allows you to experience the history of Chicago in a really neat three dimensional journey with motion simulation and all. In Navy Pier, you can also take time for some fun at the Funhouse Maze of Chicago.

I bet you never thought you could explore Chicago in a way as interactive as this one. But that's not all. For the kids, or even the adults who still have some kid spirit in them, there is another Chicago attraction that is sure to please. It's called the FireZone, and it help kids understand fire safety directly from the real firefighters who deal with it every day. Kids won't forget this experience, and they'll take life lessons home with them.

There are also short trips specifically designed for those who are in need of some romance. Among these are boat tours along the shoreline, specifically on ships like the Odyssey. Step on this boat and you will enjoy the height of luxury for a few hours. There is everything from wines and music to the best in entertainment and super delicious meals.

The best part is that in the summer, your cruise will be complemented by firework shows on Wednesdays and Sundays. This really creates the perfect mood for a romantic getaway.

From boat tours to road trips, Chicago attractions can be explored by taking the city bus tours. The tours would lead you to different Chicago landmarks and tour guides will entertain you with a wealth of information regarding the city's colorful history.

While you are out, don't forget to join one of the many tours that see different niche parts of the city. There is a gourmet dining tour, tours for kids, and plenty of others. And in addition to that, there are also two awesome zoos in Chicago. One of them, the Lincoln Park Zoo, is the oldest in the U.S. but is still one of the best to visit. And my favorite part of it is that it is free to visit all year round.

The second zoo is the Brookfield Zoo which is located on the west side of downtown. It is a marvel of landscaping and has more than two thousand animals in it. Some of the other Chicago attractions that are famous are the Adler Planetarium, Shedd Aquarium, and the Field Museum.

Eco tourism In Costa Rica: Tirimbina Rainforest Center

By Victor C. Krumm

Eco tourism in Costa Rica takes many forms, is enjoyed or experienced differently, affects people in different ways, and produces different societal consequences-some obvious, some not. And, indeed, the very word "eco tourism" brings different images to mind in different people.

For many travelers, Costa Rica eco tourism is about enjoying and experiencing Costa Rica's biological diversity. This little country comprises only about 1/10,000 of the world's land surface (the size of West Virginia) yet, unbelievably, nearly one of every five species of plant and animal on the globe are found in Costa Rica. The country has more kinds of butterflies than in all of the countries on the entire African continent put together. Costa Rica has recorded almost 900 different kinds of birds, nearly as many as are in the continental United States. The world's largest Green Sea Turtle preserve has been created off the Caribbean Coast at Tortuguero National Park. 35% of the world's different species of whales and porpoises (cetaceans) are found in its offshore waters. Humpback whales from Antarctica travel thousands of miles north to Costa Rica every year while Arctic humpbacks swim thousands of miles south to the very same waters. For that reason, Costa Rica has the longest humpback viewing season anywhere. Corcovado National Park is just 20 miles long and some 8 miles wide but, according to National Geographic, is "the most biologically intense place" on the globe. Tens of thousands of persons visit Costa Rica annually to see or experience these kinds of things. I call them "vacation eco tourists."

However, ecotourism in Costa Rica is considerably more diverse and broad in scope than whale watching, taking a Costa Rica photography tour, hiking tropical jungles, or most of the usual tourist activities. And, though I bet you have never heard of it, few places exemplify that diversity of Costa Rica eco tourism experience better than the Tirimbina Rainforest Center.

The Tirimbina Rainforest Center sits on about 345 hectares, or 850 acres, of primary rain forest. This is the original rain forest that covered 99% of Central America when Christopher Columbus explored its Caribbean coast in 1502. Indeed, when you visit primary rain forest you will literally see trees that have been around since Columbus' es time. Unfortunately, over the following five centuries, burning and logging decimated most of the Central American rain forests. Today, only vestiges of this important resource remain.

The Tirimbina Rainforest Center's life story goes back to 1960 when a fellow named Robert Hunter arrived in Costa Rica from the U.S. to work for the Inter-American Institute for Science and Agriculture. He bought the land today occupied by the Center and set about preserving it. Mr. Hunter invited other scientists and researchers to visit. One of those researchers was Dr. Allen Young of the Milwaukee Public Museum, an internationally known and acclaimed expert on rain forests and cacao cultivation. He, and others like him, who have visited the Center over the last 40 years belong to a distinct group I like to think of as "research eco tourists."

Dr. Young 's fascination with Tirimbina carried over to the Milwaukee Public Museum itself. In 1986, it created a permanent exhibit about the tropical rain forest that it called "Exploring Life on Earth." Over the next several decades hundreds of thousands of children, men, and women visited the Tirimbina exhibit as "virtual eco tourists" and their increasing awareness of the importance--and fragility-of rain forests have contributed to tropical forest preservation demands by the public. The Museum bought the Tirimbina Rainforest Center and managed it until its 2006 sale to a Milwaukee nonprofit called the Pura Vida Foundation. Today, the Center belongs to a Costa Rica nonprofit organization, the Asociacion Tirimbina Para La Conservacion, Investigacion y Educacion.

I recommend visiting the Tirimbina Rainforest Center if you are any of the following: (a) A scientist or researcher interested in rain forest biology; i.e., a tropical "research eco tourist." The Center is a working rain forest research facility which has hosted many national and international projects over the years. A lot of doctorate research, graduate study, and museum projects have also taken place here; (b) A college student looking for a unique study abroad opportunity. Beginning Spring Semester 2010, Ball State University of Indianapolis will initiate a new Study Abroad in Costa Rica program directly from the Tirimbina Rainforest Center. College students will get college credits and live with local families. Though the program is modeled after two very popular Ball State study abroad programs in London and Australia, this study abroad opportunity will have a uniquely Costa Rica flavor for each "student eco tourist"; or (c) Intrigued about seeing or visiting a real working tropical forest research center that also provides educational and family activities like hikes through primary rainforest over five miles of trails; a frog tour; a bat tour; a bird tour; a night tour, and even a chocolate tour. There is an aerial tram and boat tour, too, plus a large number of optional activities (visit the Tirimbina Rainforest Center web page for a list). The Center has overnight accommodations and a restaurant on site for "family ecotourists."

Although it has been known to the tropical forest research community for over 40 years, Tirimbina Rainforest Center is only visited by 8,000 Costa Rica eco tourists a year. It is off the beaten path but if if you are planning to travel to Costa Rica, give the Center serious consideration if you are interested in eco tourism in Costa Rica.

Disneyland Travel With Kids

By Lee Reid

You won't have a good time during your visit to the Disney amusement park if you have to lug your kids around in your arms.

My guess is that unless you are in super shape, you will quickly suffer from exhaustion.

You should also be considerate of your child.

It is well known that even kids become exhausted from walking around Disneyland all day.

You need a way to get your child around the theme park without either of you becoming completely worn out.

Well, the perfect solution is using a stroller.

Many visitors to Disneyland that are in the know utilize strollers for their kids.

Disneyland resorts even offer them as rentals for a very low fee.

Strollers are usually available for under $9 per day and there are discounts if you require multiple strollers.

The strollers available for rental at Disneyland are of course very clean and well maintained.

If you do decide to rent a stroller at Disneyland, here is a tip.

All the strollers available for rent look exactly the same.

My advice is to add something to the stroller, like a red ribbon, so you can quickly identify it from other strollers that might be in your area.

There are a few guidelines when it comes to bringing your own stroller or using a Disney rental.

One of the most important rules is that you should never leave your child alone in the stroller without supervision.

This will help to prevent possible problems that could occur if something unfortunate were to happen. Furthermore, it is good common parental sense.

Second, never leave any items of value in the stroller.

With so many dishonest characters lurking about, don't make your valuables an easy target for them to steal.

After all, Disney is an experience that should be enjoyed by both adults and children.

So remember, bring a stroller or rent one from Disney if you travel to the magical kingdom with a younger child or an infant.

You will be glad you did.

Free Legal Advice

By Johann Ken Flanders

When you are inadvertently caught committing a motoring offence, it is vital that you seek professional advice as soon as you can. The problem with this is that you will quite often have to pay a consultation fee in order to have access to the best advice.

This need not be the case as good quality advice is available online, and consultations are often free of charge. We all stray over the speed limit from time to time, it is difficult not to in today's busy world when you have so much else to think about. Many people accidentally commit minor offences, often through a moments lack of concentration and are then faced with potential points on their licences, large fines or even disqualification.

Unless you are very familiar with the intricacies of motoring law you will either plead guilty or try to fight your case if you feel that you have been unjustly prosecuted. It is very important that you seek advice as the law is very specific on the terms of each and every prosecution. If all of the correct procedures have not been fulfilled then your case may even be thrown out of court.

If you are going to seek advice, it is a good idea to seek out a specialist in the field. For motoring offences you don't really want a divorce specialist and vice versa, so conduct due diligence before you follow any advice given. Many good solicitors will almost pay their own fees with the savings in fines and inconvenience that they offer you. Obviously the circumstances of each offence is different, but a great deal of the time there will be room for a good solicitor to greatly affect the outcome in your favour.

The important thing is not to stick your head in the sand, if you do then you will only make things worse. If you are proactive about your pending conviction then you have far more chance to alter the outcome. If you act today then you will give your solicitor the maximum possible chance to achieve the best possible result for you. Even if you plan to represent yourself, seeking professional free advice is the best way to prepare yourself before you enter the courtroom.

A courtroom can be an intimidating place so by going in fully prepared you will give yourself the right ammunition to defend yourself effectively. Alternatively, you can seek out the free advice and then decide that it would be best to get a professional to represent you.

To answer your question, most of the time you can find good deals or sometimes free stuff when planning a trip to Las Vegas. You just have to know how to work the system.

Well let's start off with the fun part, FREE STUFF! Whoa now, don't get too excited because to be honest, most people don't get free rooms or airfare when going to Las Vegas. That's just the facts. However, it is possible to achieve, and here's how.

If you gamble a lot and are part of a casino's players club, they will start sending you offers in the mail. A lot of times these offers include free hotel stays, food, shows, and transportation. However, the kind of offers you get depends on how often you gamble and how much money you are betting.

Now, if you gamble more than a normal customer the casino will provide you with a "Casino Host". A host's job is to give you free stuff and make you happy! Yes, I said that correctly. Their job is to give you stuff! So, if you are offered a Casino Host, be glad. They will give you their card, and next time you plan on coming to town call them on up. They will set you up with rooms, nightclub reservations, show tickets, and pretty much anything you can think of. Don't start doing cartwheels just yet though, as they can't give you EVERYTHING. They have bosses to answer to as well and the things you get still depends on how much money you're gambling, and how long you're there. But having a casino host really is the best way to go about getting free stuff.

Now, if you are like most people, you don't gamble enough to get these special offers or to have a "Casino Host". So what is one to do to save a buck? You really have two options.

*Book your vacation through a booking company that offers vacation packages. If the hotel itself isn't going to give you free stuff, go ahead and go through one of these companies to find a discount on a Las Vegas hotel and airfare. A lot of times you purchase things together like a flight, hotel, and a rental car. You can often find really good deals doing this, because these companies will often buy a "block" of hotel rooms, or a certain amount of rental cars and they get a deal for buying in bulk. Therefore, they can pass the discount onto customers like you!

*Visit the hotel's website. Especially in Las Vegas, different hotels will give discounts for Las Vegas rooms seasonally. You can often find a deals such as, "Get a room for $175 a night, and receive a $25 food credit, and $30 in free slot play."

In conclusion, you have a couple of different roads that you can take to get that Las Vegas hotel and airfare discount that you're seeking. You can gamble a lot to get deals, you can book through a booking company, or you can check for deals on the hotel's websites. There really much of a reason to pay sticker price until you shop around a little for those Las Vegas air hotel specials.

What are the Rules Regarding Bringing Liquids on Flights?

By Amy Nutt

Ever since the tragic events of 9-11, airlines have stepped up security in order to protect their passengers and give them comfort and ease when flying. If you have not flown recently, you should be aware of the rules regarding bringing liquids on flights.

The 3-1-1 Rule

TSA has established strict policies about the quantity of toothpaste, bottled water, and other liquid and gel items permitted in carry-on luggage. Travelers boarding cheap flights are allowed to bring on board liquids with a capacity of 100ml / 100 grams or less, which can fit into one clear re-sealable plastic bag with a capacity of no more than 1 liter. One bag per passenger is permitted. Ditch the drink if there is more than 100ml in the container.

Liquids and Gels in Carry-Ons

Liquids and Gels can be carried on but only in limited quantities. Liquids and gels must be in individual containers of three ounces or less and placed inside a clear plastic bag. The TSA stresses that "containers should fit comfortably into your bag, and that only one bag is permitted per passenger." If you are bringing more than three ounces of any liquid or gel such as shampoo, it should go into your checked luggage. The TSA does not require that liquids and gels be kept in their original labeled containers, although doing so may help speed up the screening procedure.

Prescription Medications, Baby Formula, and Milk

You have to declare prescription medications, baby formula, and milk at the security checkpoint. You can carry more than three ounces without being placed in a plastic bag. The TSA recommends but does not require that prescription medications be in their original labeled containers. The TSA can also make exceptions for other medicines such as eye drops, contact lens solution, and insulin. The TSA recommends keeping vitamins in their original labeled containers, but does not mandate doing so. You are allowed to bring more than 100ml of the following: baby formula, baby food, milk or juice (as long as you have an infant less than two years of age with you!), prescription and essential non-prescription medicines. You must declare all such items at security screening and additional screening may be required.

Makeup

Makeup such as liquid mascara, lip gels, or other liquid makeup items, has to be placed in a plastic bag in three-ounce or smaller containers. Lipstick, powders, and solid lip balms are not subject to the rules and can be transported in carry-on bags.

Taking Food on Flights?

Solid food is permitted in both checked and carry-on baggage. All liquid food in your carry-on (for example, yogurt, pudding or jam) must be in containers of 100ml or less. All containers must fit in the same clear, closed, re-sealable 1 liter plastic bag as all other containers of liquids, aerosols or gels you are carrying. Any containers over 100ml should be placed in checked baggage.

Can I bring dry ice? A Snow Globe? Or, Piatas?

The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority website has an extensive list of what is allowed and what is not. Dry ice and snow globes get a yes. Piatas, sadly, are a no.

At the Screening Checkpoint

Take your plastic bag out of your carry-on luggage and place it in one of the provided trays.

It is more important than ever to follow airline guidelines. Savvy travelers know that the fastest way to get through airport security is to travel light and to remember the rules on carrying liquids.
