Why Get Rental Car Insuranace?

By Abel Satiku

When you personally purchase a rental car, you must consider the important reasons for buying the insurance package. Unlike what some people think, your personal car insurance or other type of individually owned insurance might not protect the rental car. It might neither cover you or the rental agency.

When choosing a rental company, as well as the car you'd like to rent, check into the price of a car rental, and be sure to consider the total price, not just the flat fee for the car because the rental itself plus the rental insurance might add up to a hefty sum. You don't want any surprises we you receive the final bill.

Purchasing reliable rental insurance is important because accidents and mishaps happen to even the most experienced drivers, and it is convenient as well since the rental car agency can sell it to you right on the spot at the very same time when you receive your car. The well known rental companies, like Avis, Advantage, and Hertz should offer premium packages, a distinct advantage over local rental agencies that probably cannot afford the quality coverage. As you purchase your insurance for your car rental, you should assure yourself that it is not a waste of money. Rental Agencies sometimes do not make it clear to new customers by not quoting additional fees that the package includes more than just a daily or mileage flat fee. The insurance is figured separately.

Two major reasons for purchasing insurance for your car include coverage for yourself and coverage for the rental company as well. First, coverage for yourself is necessary because should you be involved in an accident in which you are at fault, the insurance will pick up the tab. Theft and vandalism that are not your fault are covered as well. In other words, you are protected against happenings that you cannot control, similarly to the normal way regular car insurance works.

The coverage for the rental agency includes two situations. If you have an at fault accident, or damage the car in any way, whether personally or intentionally, the rental insurance will see that the rental car agency is covered. Second, if the car has some kind of breakdown or is deficient in some way, the insurance company will actually replace the car. The coverage will be at least as good or better than what you have on you own car.

Although rental insurance might somehow seem like a waste of money since you are already paying for hefty, expensive insurance for your own car, reconsider because your own insurance may not be enough. Additional insurance might seem pricey when added to the daily charge for the rental car but it is a necessity.
