What You Really Need To Buy For Camping

By Dustin Faulkner

Whether you are an experienced camping enthusiast or you are starting off on your first camping experience, it is important to have the proper gear and equipment. Many of the supplies can be expensive and some items may be hard to find. To get the most for your money, though, there are several tricks you can employ.

Plan ahead

Unless you have an unlimited budget, a camping trip is not something where you can get everything at once without a bit of planning. Research where you will be going, the conditions that will be present and the climate. Make a list of all the supplies you will need and determine what items you have available and what items you will need to purchase. If you can, try to purchase the equipment over the course of time, to avoid impacting your budget all at once.

How much money can you spend?

Browse the internet and retail stores to have a ballpark idea of all you will need to spend. Make sure you include cooking utensils, food and water and other eating supplies in your budget. If you think you have gone over your budget, try to determine where you can possibly save, or see if there are any things you can do without on your trip. Make sure you don't save on survival and first-aid items, since those are the really important things to have on your trip. But, what you can cut down on, is a few of the items that are considered extras. If you can, do a price check comparison online. Not all stores have discounted prices on everything, so if you can split your purchases among different stores, you will probably save money.

Don't forget that equipment can also be borrowed or rented.

If you have friends who have camped in the past, they may be able to supply some equipment for you to borrow. This will definitely help curb down your beginning expenses. Even if you can get pieces from several people, this may help. Make sure to keep a list of who gave you which items so you can return them to the correct people. Respect other people's property, and return the items in a good, clean state. And, don't forget that some items can also be rented. Grills and showers, for example, could possibly be found at some rental location. For maximum convenience, you can rent a recreational vehicle which will supply cooking, eating and sleeping facilities.

Buy Used and Discounted

Check on the Internet or at local resale shops for used equipment. Many people will purchase items for camping then decide they don't want it anymore or they upgrade. This approach can lead you to good deals and great quality. Many discount stores also have a sporting section. You might not be able to find all the items you need, but you can certainly find some great prices on dishes, heaters, grills, tents and sleeping bags.

Camping comes at a price, especially for someone new needing all the necessary equipment. But, if you just plan ahead and invest a little effort looking for items over time, you can buy quality equipment at a price you can afford. Figure out what you will need and make a list. Browse in different places to find the best prices. It will be so much more fun camping when you don't have to spend an arm and a leg to go.
