Briefcases have been around for a very long time. When they first hit the market they were used by salesmen because most salesmen in the past all traveled. The briefcase allowed them to keep their sales material safely stored away and allowed them to be mobile. The briefcase was like the first safe and suitcase.
So who else would carry a briefcase in the past that we would think of seeing them do it today? Gamblers. Yes that is correct gamblers would carry their briefcases because they did a lot of traveling if it was their means of making money. So they would show up in town with their cards, poker chips and other gambling materials right in their briefcase ready to work.
If you were a traveling gambler chances are you were also a con man. These traveling gamblers would want to get out of town as fast as they possibly could and the briefcase allowed them to do just that. They could stack up some major cash and then hit the road before anyone knew they had been hustled. This was great for them because if they were got they could face some life threatening punishment.
Your neighborhood doctor would also carry a briefcase with him in the past. There were not a lot of hospitals and very few doctors as well. So what the doctors would actually do is make home visits. They needed to have all of their medicine and equipment they needed in order to do a check up. Since it is impossible to carry everything by hand they used a briefcase to make their home visits. I wish my doctor would make a home visit today.
