When observing cetaceans or whale watching Gloucester is the perfect place to go. Some companies that take people out and have been in business for fifteen plus years claim they see a variety of these mammoth creatures. Among the types of animals available to view are cetaceans, dolphins and sea birds.

There are 15 types of Cetaceans to see when on a trip. These marvelous creatures vary in size. Seven of them are considered Great because as they and measure over 30 feet in length. The Blue cetacean is the largest of them all.

Despite common belief, these animals are not fish, they are mammals. They share the same characteristics as the common dog or cat in your home. Although they live in the ocean, they are hot blooded and need to breathe air. They give birth to live young. The females in the species have mammary glands to feed their young.

Cetaceans are believed to have once walked on land. They are thought to look like the wild dogs of Africa today. It is theorized that they took the sea when an asteroid, after striking the earth, made food scarce. The cetaceans of today have come a long way from what they were 65 million years ago.

The orca is largest of dolphins and the most studied. What we know about pods (groups of family dolphins swimming together) we know from the extensive observations of the orca.
