Oil Wrestling on Turkey Holidays - The Country's Most Traditional Sport

By Steve Alexander

Turkey offers lots of sports, from football to sailing, but the main traditional sport in the country is oil wrestling. Turkey holidays can be made just that little bit more interesting if you decide to take a break from sunbathing to witness first-hand some traditional Turkish culture.

Check out where and when the matches are due to take place if you want to experience oil wrestling on your Turkey holidays. It is thought that the first match took place back in 1065 BC when the Persians were ruling Turkey. Rostam was one of the first ever wrestlers to compete and was believed to have had the powers to save the world from evil forces.

Depending on what region you're in, the matches have a time cap of 30 or 40 minutes. Traditionally though, matches could go on for days as they had no time limit. The entire country hosts matches at various times of the year, with the oil wrestling season running for eight months.

Why not head out for a traditional Turkish bath if you want to relax after an oil wrestling match. As it gets rid of all your dirt, it will relax and clean you, meaning you'll tan very easily for the rest of your holiday.

Camel wrestling and football are some of the other sports that are popular in Turkey. Usually in response to a female camel being in heat, camel wrestling sees two camels battle it out against each other. With the top league consisting of 18 teams including the famous Galatasaray, Turkish people are very passionate about football.

The three-star Club Hotel Poseidon is a great option if you're looking for Dalaman holidays. It offers facilities such as restaurants, animation shows, children's facilities and swimming pools and is very close to the beach. Located one hour away from the airport, the Majestic Hotel is a complex found in the tourist area Olu Deniz.
