Quite close to the Lake District national park is the market town of Penrith. This town is thought to be named after the red hill that is quite close to town. It is the local red sandstone that makes the hill appears red. There is still a part of an old roman road nearby as the Romans did travel extensively in this area.

The main part of the ruins includes the main keep and the double gatehouse. This castle was highly defensible and managed to repel many invaders. You can make a day of visiting these ruins.
Dalemain House is a great historic house built in a Georgian style. Inside there are Tudor and medieval rooms as this house has been occupied since the Saxons ruled. This house has a Pele tower and extensive gardens to explore. This house has not changed much since the last two wings were added in the mid 1700s making it a great example of different eras.
Another old historic home to visit is Hutton-in-the-forest which contains extensive grounds as well as several collections that can be viewed in the house.
