Safaris to Kenya: Must See Travel Attractions in Nairobi

By Martin Mureithi

Nairobi is one city in East Africa that has become unique in the sense that business as well as leisure travel exist symbiotically. The city is well prepared to meet the needs of the different visitors that come to this place. Some of the attractions that one can enjoy in this city include visiting Museums, restaurants as well as a game park which is in the city itself!

Nairobi city is blessed to be home to the Nairobi National Park that is located 7km from the center of the city! Nairobi National park is the only park in the world that borders a city. Visitors to the park also do get to have magnificent views of the Nairobi Skyscrapers as they go on a game drive to this park. The park is about 117 km2 and has numerous wild animals including buffaloes among other wild animal species. We also have the David Sheldrick trust which cares for orphaned animals that was founded by Mervyn Cowie in 1946. When you visit this place you get to view diverse bird life and aquatic species.

For those that are bold and courageous, a visit to the Nairobi snake park will be a blessing for them. Within the confines of this park we have deadly vipers that are enclosed behind thick glass walls . This park is quite popular with international as well as local visitors. For those that are superstitious of snakes then it would be best to avoid this place. Some of the vipers that call this place home include cobras, mambas, African rock python among others. We also have American Alligators as well as crocodiles in this park

Nairobi Museum, established in 1910 is another major attraction within Nairobi. The museum serves both the scientific as well as tourists and it keeps important historical monuments for Kenya. The museum also houses a botanical garden as well as a snake park.

For those that love locomotives, the Railway museum would be an ideal choice. The railway museum records the troubled history involved in the construction of the Kenya - Uganda railway line. You will learn more about the lions that loved eating humans for lunch (Tsavo man eaters) which developed an appetite for the railway workers in the early 1900s. Learn how they were eventually killed. The old steam engines are on exhibit and once in a while they are fired up to offer visitors rides along the Kenyan countryside.

One of the most famous landmarks in Nairobi is the Kenyatta International Conference Center. The center has a very unique architecture which makes it an iconic landmark similar to the Taj-Mahal in India or the Eiffel Tower in France. Within its confines we have the gigantic statue of the founding father of the country where you can take photographs.

A must visit attraction in Nairobi would be the Carnivore Restaurant which at one time was voted as one of the top 50 restaurants in the world by the UK Restaurant Magazine. There are various succulent meats to chose from which are cut from skewers and placed directly onto your hot plate. Here you eat to your heart contentment washing the meat down with fine drinks. This makes this restaurant to be dubbed as "Africa's Greatest Eating Experience". International music artists like Kirk Franklin have entertained people here.

The Kenya National Archives is ideal for visiting researchers interested in delving into the historical documents that shaped Kenya. African art lovers can visit the African Heritage in Carnivore, Village Market in Gigiri, to get such. All the destinations above are easily accessible by taxis from the City Center.
