Milton Keynes is a large town in Buckinghamshire, though with the original planning it was designed to be a city. However it was not granted city status. The main purpose of the town was to help deal with the congestion in London and this was to be an area to house those that worked in London. The town was rebuilt and designed in the 1950s and was suppose to be completely self sustaining as well as an important regional center.
Originally much of Milton Keynes was farmland and used for agriculture. Some of the earliest artifacts have been dated back to the Bronze Age. Before the town was expanded a full archaeological survey was done and many artifacts from Medieval times, Anglo-Normal, Iron Age, Roman-British, Anglo-Saxon and the industrial revolution.
The designing plan of Milton Keynes was recognized around the world as many famous architects, martin Richardson, Ralph Erskine, John Winter, Henning Larsen, Norman Foster and Richard MacCormac, and all designed buildings in the new town. This town was designed using a street hierarchy and when looking at a map you can see the different grids.
Milton Keynes has one of the most popular theater halls that can be found outside of London. They hold musicals, operas, comedy, concerts and more throughout the year. There are several galleries and The Gallery exhibits contemporary art for free. Milton Keynes also has its own orchestra which performs concerts at times during the year.
A great historical home to visit is the beautiful Woburn Abbey, the house of the Duke of Bedford. Inside are several collections of furniture and porcelain. There are also many rooms that can be used for events and functions. Woburn Abbey has a safari park and golf club and extensive gardens that can be explored. There is something for everyone in the family.
About 20% of the entire city contains green spaces and there are many lakes and parks that can be explored. If you like wakeboarding or dragon boat racing then you should stop by Willen Lake. This park also contains a Peace Pagoda. There are beautiful beds of wildflowers and other plants that can be viewed on walks through Shenley park, Linford Park and how park.
Running right through the center of the town is the Grand Union canal and you can tour the canal on a narrow boat or cruiser. The town also has Campbell Park which is very much its own central park. This is very close to the center of the town.
