Lincoln carries the name of a Cathedral town as it contains its own cathedral. This town is located in Lincolnshire, England. This is a very old town as the very first town has been dated to the 1st century BC during the Iron Age.
The first Lincoln Cathedral was completed in 1092 and was very important. Unfortunately it burned to the ground after an earthquake and fire that occurred in 1185 and had to be rebuilt. The newer cathedral was much larger than the first one and with its main spire it was the tallest building in the world at the time, taller than the pyramids. The cathedral has several bells in each of its towers as well as the bell the great Tom of Lincoln.
The cathedral is quite important and the first Lincoln Cathedral was finished in 1092. It was rebuilt after an earthquake and fire in 1185, though the new cathedral was much larger. Originally the main spire was taller than the Great Pyramids, making the cathedral the tallest building in the world. The cathedral has several bells, The Great Tom of Lincoln, thirteen bells in the south west tower, five in the central tower and two in the northwest tower.
As with the Romans the location of the castle was strategic and easy to defend. Lincoln had many battles in which the castle played an important role. Lincoln Castel was also used as a tool to control the interior of the country.
Newport arch is what remains of a Roman gate form the 3rd century. This road is still used and is the oldest used arch in the United Kingdom. This was one of three gates in which you could get into town. This was the original north gate. It was constructed when the Romans occupied the city and it was the capital of the Roman lands in the United Kingdom.
A popular but strenuous hike is the walk up Steep Hill. This street is in the historic part of town and most individuals that partake in the climb up need to use the provided hand rails. As you can image the name comes from the steep gradient of the street. You can stop and rest at one of the many tea rooms, pubs and independent shops as most people will need to stop for a rest going up and coming down the hill.
If you want a bit of the tropics then you should visit the Sir Joseph Banks conservatory named after the famous explorer and naturalist.
