Travel photography: who is the best?

By Don Lindstrom

For those of us who live in fairly ordinary places, travel seems like a magical, yet far off possibility. It not only takes a lot of money and time to travel the world, but it also requires that you are able to leave behind all of your responsibilities at home. Because of this, many people just cannot go travelling, and for those people, travel photography is one of the only ways in which they can see the beauty the planet has to offer.

Good travel photography is hard to pull off. You have to make each photograph striking and beautiful. Yet, at the same time, you have to make sure that you are not idealising the subject, for your photography should reflect some truth about the subject, otherwise you're not conveying anything but a pretty picture. Despite these high standards, the rise of the internet has meant that talented people have been able to share their photos easily. There are countless great travel photographers, filling blogs every day with stunning images. The following are the best I have found so far.

The first is the English photographer Tom Robinson, who appears to spend all of his time abroad. He takes excellent photographs of his travels around South East Asia and South America. His website is great looking, too, for he divides it up into continuous streams of photos for each place, making them into picture essays arguing for a certain perspective on each.

The second is the photographer Arte Wolfe. His photographs are not only stunning aspects on exotic places and things, but he is also an excellent source of information. He has been taking travel photos for around 30 years no, so he knows what he is talking about. Following his activities will inform you not only about photography, but about travel as well.

This is just two of many great photographers, but to find more look at which photography blogs they are following. That way you can find out who inspires these masters of their art.
