You could travel just before the beginning of summer or just after it as well, and can still take advantage of many of the benefits that you will see during this time. If you travel during May then you will find that only the early tourists are coming in and you can still get some good sunlight and warm weather. Travelling in September is slightly more temperamental, but this will depend on where you travel.
October, November, and April, are probably the worst months to actually visit Alaska. Generally it is very wet and there isn't a great deal for tourists to do, and so touring during this time isn't the best option.

If you were to travel any time between December and March you will find that all sorts of snow and ice-based activities are available for you to get involved with.
