A small historical town, famous for its growth during the gold rush in the nineteen fifties, Beechworth Victoria, is a popular tourist destination. The original name of Mayday Hills, may still be seen in the names of some of the buildings. The town has reinvented itself as a popular destination for visitors travelling between towns.

The town can be accessed by car, rail or coach, and is a three hour drive, north of Melbourne and seven hours from Sydney. Coach services and time tables for other transport services may be located online. Day trips and tours are available for visitors to choose from, a local tourist information bureau may be able to book ahead for visitors. Some families may prefer to work out their own routes and travel by hired car to their destinations.

Beechworth, or as some may know it affectionately as the Elegant Dame, has a large contingent of heritage sites, beautifully preserved from the time of the gold rush.
