Dominican Republic's Santiago: A City filled with Fun

By Okiro Han

Santiago de los Trenta Caballeros is the second largest city in the Dominican Republic. The gold rush prompted the growth of this city during the time of Columbus. And still, even until now, there is a gold rush to be enjoyed - golden memories, golden dreams and a holiday that simply sparkles and shines.

What are the attractions, you may ask? Well, this dynamic and vibrant city is lined with sites and monuments that are testimonials of the city's past and its forward-looking present. Your first stop should be a trip to the rum and tobacco factories. There is the E Leon Jimenez Tobacco Company and the Tobacco Museum, as well as the Bermudez Rum Factory.

For a bite of local art and culture, head for Centro Leon, where there are plenty of activities and expos. There is a whole line-up of activities for the art lover and connoisseur. Cinemacafe is a great venue if you want to see how the art and film scene is in this city.

Visit the Cathedral of Santiago, Parque Duarte and the Monument a los Heroes de la Restauracion. The Tomas Morel Museum of Folkloric Art holds a fascinating collection of carnival masks, a testimony of the city's carnival culture. You can also go for a drive along the countryside and enjoy the sight of fruit farms, tobacco fields and coffee plantations.

The beaches are also quite enjoyable. The clear waters and the white powdery sand of the beaches are excellent playgrounds for getting that tan or for trying on a spot of fishing, snorkeling and swimming. Spend a relaxing time doing something mundane as enjoy a cold daiquiri by the beach or picking some shells.

This tropical island also boasts of world class shops, hotels, parts, as well as shopping centers. Bars, discos and nightclubs are quite easy to find and offer a welcome diversion at night. Do the meringue, the salsa, reggae, the papi chulo, papi papi and the bachata at some of the clubs.
