Lanai is one of the smaller and less traveled islands in Hawaii. For much of the 20th century the island was mainly inhabited by locals and employees of the largest pineapple plantation in the world.
In the early'80's, the growing and harvesting of pineapples met its end on Lanai because the Dole Company sold the plantation to the corporation of Castle & Cook. After the sale and under new ownership, Lanai was transformed into the current exclusive vacation destination.
There are three hotels on Lanai: The Four Seasons Resort at Manele Bay, The Four Seasons Lodge at Koele, and the Hotel Lanai. The Resort at Manele Bay is the only Lanai hotel located on the beach and it was built atop the cliffs above the beach. The Lodge at Koele is located near the top of the highest point of elevation on the island and is seated among a pine forest and exotic gardens. Hotel Lanai, located in the heart of Lanai City, was designed to resemble an antiquated plantation style home.
The Four Seasons Resort at Manele Bay combines dazzling Asian and Mediterranean features with the natural beauty of the Hawaiian Islands. Perched on the red lava cliffs above Hulopoe Beach, the hotel boasts the best beach for swimming, surfing, and snorkeling on Lanai. The Manele Bay is the most luxurious of the hotels on Lanai with its large hand painted murals, its many exotic gardens and oriental antiques.
The Four Seasons Lodge at Koele is located eight miles from the ocean in upcountry Lanai at an elevation of 1700 feet. The hotel sits in a large forest of Cook Pines and is built to resemble an old baronial hunting lodge. It is, in fact, the largest wooden building in Hawaii. This hotel is certainly the most novel of the Lanai hotels.
The Lodge at Koele emits a sophisticated old-world European elegance with its huge stone fireplaces, high-beamed ceilings, over-stuffed furniture and antique rugs. The Lodge is surrounded by rolling hills, sweeping lawns and gardens, and is home to one of two championship golf courses on Lanai, The Experience at Koele.
The oldest of the three hotels is The Hotel Lanai. This hotel was built originally to house the guests and executive employees of the Dole Corporation. The Hotel Lanai was remodeled in'94 and offers its guests a clean and comfortable stay in a plantation style hotel located in the heart of Lanai City.
Whichever hotel on Lanai you choose, you will feel right at home with the locals and the staff on Lanai. The people of Lanai are incredibly gracious and helpful and will let you know that they are genuinely glad you chose Lanai, their island, to spend your time your time and your money.
