By Sonia Smith

A well packed backpack is really an amazing gift for your trip. This backpack should pack every essential gear inside orderly and neatly. Do you know how to achieve it with a multiday hiking backpack? Every backpacker should be wise enough to spare some time and energy to acquire the skills of good packaging. There is no unified standard for packaging, and the packing tips I list below is only a guideline with the hope to do you some favor in your hiking preparation.

CHOOSE A RIGHT BACKPACK First things should go first. Of course, choosing a right and suitable backpack should be the first step in the packing process. Besides the type, color and your favorite, the size and material of a pack should be the most important features in guiding you to pick a right bag. Just be sure that your pack can fit you well not just for your body but for your torso. Since you will take a multi-day hiking, your backpack must has enough space for you to pack all your necessary gears in. When you browse the backpacks in the store, you may keep the size label in your mind, which can help you pick a perfectly-sized bag. Material should also come to your notice. The waterproof material should be the preferred due to the condition that you will go through some wet areas or camp outside all the night. The waterproof hiking backpack will ensure all your stuff to keep dry and nice. Then, how to pack a hiking bag next?

Item Preparation: The best method to have all your equipment and supplies packed is to assemble them together. Put them in some empty place and check whether you leave out anything or not. Here is a list of some essential gears: hiking backpack, sleeping bag and pad, tent, clothes, food and drink, matches, map, compass, knife, first aid kit, sunglasses, water bottles, etc. You may add or delete anything according to your hiking reality.

GENERAL RULES There are no standard rules to guide the backpack packing; here I summarize some general guidance according to my experience. Put the less used items in the bottom and the most used items on the top; put the heavy stuff towards the back and the light stuff away from the back; fill the sides and the external pockets with the often used things, keep the pack streamlined and compressed. I will explain the rule with the specific items step by step.

The bulky and less used equipment includes sleeping bag, sleeping pad, tent, all of which can only be used at night, so you need put your sleeping bag at the bottom (while some internal frame backpacks are designed with a sleeping bag compartment), and then put your sleeping pad and tent horizontally at the bottom or middle part following the sleeping bag. Clothes, food and drink go the next. They are arranged in the middle or on the top according to their using frequency. Make sure to bring a rain coat and some change clothes and put them next to your back in case it is poked by the gears. Food should be arranged in separate bags for specific meal. Another important thing that shouldn't be ignored is the first aid kit. Even though it can't be used during your whole journey, yet it is vital for your emergency. The pockets and some minor compartments are ideal place for the other accessories.

Lock all the zippers and pockets when everything is packed inside the hiking pack. Tighten and adjust the shoulder straps and belts to fit for your torso. Until now, a hiking backpack is fully packed. What's waiting for you is the expectant hiking.
