Playlist for Your Holiday in Spain

By Catherine McCulloch

If you're planning on booking a holiday to Spain, there are plenty of reasons to go from the sun and beaches to the food and nightlife. However the music is another key part of the Spanish culture that is often overlooked. We've rounded up a guide to the sounds of Spain.

Wherever you end up holidaying throughout the Balearics, one thing's for sure, and that's that you'll hear plenty of authentic Spanish music. Instruments indicative of this traditional genre include the bagpipes and tabor pipes, however, Jota, a form of Spanish music which incorporates dance is mainly associated with the areas of Asturias, Galicia and Murcia.

When you're looking at deals on hotels, it's also worth thinking about the type of holiday you want, as the soundtrack will be a part of your Spanish experience - culture vultures for example, will enjoy the traditional villages and often guitar based music and dance typically found on the mainland.

Flamenco also plays a large role in Spanish music, which is mostly recognisable by its mellow, yet upbeat guitar chords in addition to its popularity with locals and tourists of every age and musical taste. Most of all this type of music adds to the Spanish ambiance and can often be heard at restaurants and bars.

The mainstream pop industry is big business, and high-profile artists such as Enrique Iglesias continue to make waves in the international music arena. And just like us Brits, Spain has also embraced the festival scene; if you're into rock music check out the legendary Benicassim near Valencia, while jazz is huge - lovers of this musical genre will find festivals dotted all over the mainland and islands throughout the year.
