By Bob Young

South Carolina is really a good destination to rent an aircraft and go soaring. If you're hailing from SC or simply just visiting, licensed pilot or aspiring pilot, South Carolina offers you some great flying journeys. The region comes with a range, from foothills to shores all inside of a few hours of each other as the Cessna flies.

There are not many locations in the U.S. that permit you a great number of attractions in such closeness. If someone flies out from any place the mid-state region, you may be just about anywhere in about 90 minutes even with a pokey plane.

For anyone who is wondering about being a licensed pilot, the region has a range of flight schools. Most are found in the major towns, but a few are spread over the less significant areas. There are even official Cessna and Cirrus flight training centers within the state. If you're currently an airplane pilot, all of the flight schools will rent airplanes on an hourly basis to licensed aircraft pilots. There also are lots of other locations which have aircraft for rent. Upon getting a plane, an outstanding area to go is definitely the coast. Get out over the water and drop down low allowing you to view every thing. Not only do you have many of the hotels and points of interest on the ocean, but numerous uninhabited parts and bare sea small islands which have been not reachable by motor vehicle. There are, in addition numerous large airports following the seaside, a few of which have crew cars available on a first come basis. This will make a wonderful little pleasure trip which could be easily expanded into a weekend escape.

Famous areas like Charleston also are lying around the shore and they are amazing in the air despite the fact that they are built to be viewed from the ocean. Flying above the harbor offers fabulous vistas of the battery and Fort Sumter together with the group of islands. Don't get any outrageous creative ideas about wanting to land on the old aircraft carrier!

On the other side of the state there are actually some spectacular mountain flying in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Greenville Downtown and Spartanburg Downtown are two larger airfields a a short distance from amazing mountain aviation. Once you're in the mountains there are some great airfields to land at. If you are able to fit, there's a tiny little airstrip up in Brevard, NC, or else there's always Asheville's primary airport just down the road. This whole area is packed with sights, many of which cost nothing such as hiking and a multitude of waterfalls.

South Carolina also has its share of great restaurants at or near airports. Spartanburg Downtown is just a short while from the famous Beacon Drive-In that's been featured with the Food Network among others. Charleston also offers numerous great restaurants that have also drawn nationwide mass media interest. One of these, Fuel, was built in an oldtime service station and even managed to serve its way up into a showcased place on Diners Drive-Ins and Dives, also on the Food Network.

As you have seen, South Carolina is a great area to fly. The state's small size means that you possibly can make anywhere you want to a pleasing little day trip and maybe even a weekend holiday. If you're wondering whether flying is for you, call one of several flight schools and take an intro lesson. I guarantee you won't regret it.
